Summary
Preterm children have more health and developmental problems than those born full term. Although we know the problems faced by those tiniest and most immature, more questions remain. What problems do they face as adults? What new treatments are available to improve their outcomes? Are the more “mature” preterms at risk as well? My research program aims to address these questions through the efforts of the Victorian Infant Collaborative Study team, a large research team that I lead.
Macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1) participates in cancer, stroke and heart attack. Studies show that measurement of MIC-1 in blood and cancer tissue might be useful to detect the development of cancer and determine whether it will spread. Also, MIC-1 measurement can identify people who are at risk of dying of cancer, heart attack and stroke. This study will show how MIC-1 may be used to prevent, diagnose and help treat these conditions and reduce healthcare costs.

Health and obesity are socially patterned, with lower socio-economic status associated with worse health and higher obesity prevalence. With its high, and increasing prevalence, obesity is likely to be a substantial contributor to increased social inequalities in health. This project will support Dr Livingston's world-leading work to better understand the reasons that alcohol consumption and related-harm changes at the population level. The aim of this Career Development Award is to develop computer simulation models to predict health outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes. Summary
The quality of evidence we use to make health care decisions can be improved if we use systematic reviews that are planned ahead, that use raw data from each participant and include all the trials that have looked at the clinical problem. This research program will utilise these three ways of obtaining better quality data and will thus make research results more reliable. In particular, we will use these techniques to address health problems in mothers and babies.

Summary
Alcohol misuse impacts significantly Australia’s health. More effective treatments are needed. Computer-based, decision-making tools improve treatment outcomes. Based on genetic and psychological prognostic information provided by these decision-making tools, individual patient’s strengths and weaknesses can be identified and targeted in treatment. We expect this will significantly improve treatment outcomes in this chronic, relapsing condition.
Low back pain affects one in four people in Australia and is responsible for over $8 billion spent on treatments and work loss every year. Surgery is a popular treatment approach for this multifactorial condition but we still lack high quality science to support the role of surgery for low back pain. We also lack research capacity in this field. In my fellowship, I propose to conduct high quality studies to generate and implement scientific knowledge in this field.
