Sport is important to many Australians. Our sport successes enhance our national identity, generate community pride and attract mega sport events. Currently our sport talent identification and development (TID) systems have been surpassed by our international rivals who borrowed from and improved our knowledge. This project will help regain Australia's international advantage and again make Australian TID the international benchmark. Results will highlight the role of TID practices in improving recreational participation and maximising, attracting, developing and retaining sport talent. This will result in improved use of sports limited TID funding by providing greater understanding of factors that influence elite selection and sport development.Read moreRead less
Electric field effects on cochlear tissues. The project aims to solve the underlying biology of how electricity flows through the cochlear tissues, where and how electrical stimulation excites the auditory neurons, and what the effects of sustained electrical stimulation are on the nerve fibre growth and function. The research aims to show how electric fields can be controlled in the cochlea, and how auditory nerve fibres are affected at the cellular and molecular level. The long-term aim is to ....Electric field effects on cochlear tissues. The research aims to show how electric fields can be controlled in the cochlea, and how auditory nerve fibres are affected at the cellular and molecular level. The long-term aim is to utilise these findings to improve the control of neuronal excitability, for development of interfaces with the nervous system.Read moreRead less
Understanding plant uptake of organic and inorganic nitrogen for optimal fertiliser application in forestry. Nitrogen (N) in soils occurs in both organic and inorganic forms. Plants can take up inorganic N - nitrate and ammonium - but, on average, these account for only 5% of the soluble N in soils. Recent evidence suggests that plants may be able to tap into some of the 95% of N that occurs in organic forms. We will investigate the importance of organic N uptake for two plantation Eucalyptus species by tracing the uptake of different N forms by bacteria, fungi and eucalypts. This information will redefine what is meant by 'available N' and will guide the development of a new test for soil N status.Read moreRead less
Transport systems that underpin nitrogen efficient maize. This project aims to define the nitrogen transport network involved in the uptake, storage and redistribution of inorganic nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) over the developmental life cycle of maize. This information will provide novel insight into the genetic control of nitrogen use in maize and other cereal crops.

Nutritional and bacterial influences on gut and peripheral homeostasis. This project aims to understand the role of macronutrients on gut homeostasis. While the understanding of what factors affect gut homeostasis is still in its infancy, scientists know that its disruption contributes to a broad range of inflammatory diseases, including type 1 diabetes and asthma. This project will determine the role of specific macronutrients on gut microbiota, gut epithelium, and immunity in mice, and the receptors involved. This research could ultimately lead to significant decreases in the cost of healthcare.Read moreRead less

The purpose of this project is to harness the expertise available within an Australian biotechnology company, Gradipore, to develop novel methods for the preparation of mammalian spermatozoa and the segregation of these cells into X-and Y- bearing populations. This technology will find application in: (1)clinical andrology, where rapid, safe protocols for the preparation and segregation of human spermatozoa are being actively sought in the context of assisted conception and the management of sex-linked genetic diseases and (2) agriculture, particularly the cattle industry, where a capacity to predetermine the sex of the offspring would be extremely valuable.Read moreRead less

The Australian Plague Locust Commission is considering replacing an organophosphate pesticide with fipronil, a relatively new phenyl pyrazole pesticide, because it more specifically targets invertebrate animals. However, fipronil is more environmentally persistent, has high lipid solubility, is known to disrupt thyroid function and has wide variation in its toxicity to vertebrates . These characteristics place native vertebrate species at risk. Further, because peak locust activity is coincident with vertebrate breeding, there is likelihood that fipronil will affect development of young and the health of adults. We propose to launch the first comprehensive study of fipronil's effects on the health and vitality of native vertebrate adults and their offspring. We will focus on dasyurid marsupials and native birds that co-occur with plague locusts.Read moreRead less

Outcomes of social connection from community sport are widely touted and supported to exist. However, we know little about how social infrastructure actually delivers these benefits. It is difficult to understand and develop practices that organisations can use to maximise the outcomes of sport participation. This research aims to investigate how social infrastructure delivers social connection outcomes associated with community sport. Expected outcomes include novel practice based tools and guidance for community groups to enhance social connection outcomes and new understanding about the role of social infrastructure in enhancing community connection. Improved social connection is expected to improve resilience and community wellbeing.

QX DISEASE RESISTANCE IN SYDNEY ROCK OYSTERS. QX is a fatal disease of Sydney rock oysters. The protozoan parasite that causes QX has been identified in more than one third of oyster farming areas on the east coast of Australia. Disease outbreaks have already destroyed the oyster industry in some of those areas. This project tests whether a novel form of defensive protein that has been identified in some oysters can be used as a genetic marker of QX disease resistance. The selective breeding of ....QX DISEASE RESISTANCE IN SYDNEY ROCK OYSTERS. QX is a fatal disease of Sydney rock oysters. The selective breeding of disease resistant oysters based on such a genetic marker would help to control QX and secure the future of Australia's rock oyster industry.Read moreRead less

Large areas of eucalypt plantations are being established to replace native forest wood production in many areas of Australia. A major impediment facing the industry in subtropical eastern Australia is inappropriate site species matching. This is largely due to lack of understanding of the major soil types in the region and the effect on growth of different species. This project will compare site productivity and soil characteristics in two major hardwood species and investigate fundamental relationships between soil characteristics and tree root growth. The outcome will be a mechanistic understanding of soil physical limitations to tree growth.Read moreRead less
