"These blessed 'censi'": the history of an ignored credit instrument in Florentine economic, social and religious life from 1570 to 1790. The project explores the role of 'Censi', a type of annuity, in the life and economy of Florence from 1570 to 1790. It seeks to demonstrate that 'Censi' made it possible for Florentines to maintain a substantial level of prosperity throughout this period, despite the loss of a long-held leadership in banking, international trade and industry.
J.G. Crawford: Shaping Australia's Place in the World. Through a study of Sir John Grenfell (J.G.) Crawford, this project will examine transformations in Australian policy during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Crawford was a leading member of a generation of public servants who recast the practices of government, in this case through a particular focus on Australia's role in our region and among developing countries.
Soybeans and socialism: agrarian transformation in Manchuria, 1935-1965. Throughout the early twentieth century, Manchuria was known for two things: its strategic importance and its soybeans. This project examines the principles and workings of the Scottish criminal justice system and how these were represented in, and influenced by, print culture, from 1747 to 1815. It will further understanding of Australian history by looking at how legal representations of Australia influenced the Scottish Judiciary's transportation policy.
Life, death and remembrance: a prosopographical study of British combat officers killed on the Western Front, 1914-1918. This project assesses the changing character of the British combat officer class during the Great War, using the method of collective biography, and the ways that those killed were remembered and memorialised by their families. Outcomes will include a book, conference papers and a number of articles in high-quality international journals.
