Understanding this key reading process will have the potential to inform reading instruction practices from primary school through to high school. Expected outcomes are a richer understanding of the predictors, developmental time-course, and mechanisms involved in the acquisition of morphological processes in reading. Making words stick: Lexical consolidation effects in learning to read. To become skilled readers, children need to move from sounding words out to recognising them rapidly via access to rich, long-term memory representations. Little is known about how this transition is achieved, and why some children have difficulty. The Helmsman Project: Giving at-risk adolescents skills to navigate life’s journey and make a difference. This project aims to investigate how to keep able but disadvantaged youth engaged in school and give them the psychological tools they need to succeed. To meet this challenge, this project aims to propose a randomised control and extended baseline control test of a combined personal coaching and outdoor education (sailing experience) program designed to foster positive psychological outcomes ....The Helmsman Project: Giving at-risk adolescents skills to navigate life’s journey and make a difference. This project aims to investigate how to keep able but disadvantaged youth engaged in school and give them the psychological tools they need to succeed. To meet this challenge, this project aims to propose a randomised control and extended baseline control test of a combined personal coaching and outdoor education (sailing experience) program designed to foster positive psychological outcomes by developing goal strategies, hope, resilience, and self-regulation. The study aims to be extensive and novel, capturing the experiences of not just the participants but their peers, parents, teachers, and alumni mentors of the program. Intergroup emotions and prejudice toward obese people. This project will analyse how intergroup emotions (such as disgust, anger, contempt) influence prejudice toward obese people. These insights will have theoretical implications for our understanding of what drives obesity stigma. It will also have practical implications for identifying ways to reduce the prevalence of prejudice toward obese people.

Aggressive behaviour is one of the most common social behaviours that intoxicated people display. Using neuroimaging and brain stimulation technology, this project aims to identify how alcohol disrupts brain networks implicated in anger and emotion regulation. To be or not to be proud: identifying the functionality of pride in intergroup settings. This project explores how expressing the emotion of pride across different social contexts (such as highly diversified or homogenous social groups) might lead to positive or negative outcomes for the expresser. Insights from this research will likely suggest how to cultivate the positive outcomes of expressing pride in everyday relationships.
Self-control processes underlying reactive aggression. Self-control has been called the most important determinant of criminality, yet little is known about how people can effectively exert self-control over violent impulses. This project will investigate psychological and biological causes and correlates of self-control over aggressive behaviour.

This project aims to investigate the processes of language acquisition to support the development of evidence-based strategies for improving children's early language. Some children learn language earlier and more easily than others. Understanding why this is the case is important because successful acquisition is strongly associated with positive life outcomes such as academic achievement and psychological wellbeing. A new pathway to self-control: Testing a social-neurocognitive model of aggressive desires. One universal human desire is the urge to hurt another person when angry. This project aims to identify the psychological and neural mechanisms that will reduce the likelihood that people will experience the desire to hurt others when angered. Recent advances in self-regulation, have produced models sophisticated enough to develop and test predictions about how to stop harmful desires from arising.
