Sophisticated models in condensed matter physics and string theory have exposed geometric and topological structure as basic building blocks of the theory. Exciting two way exchanges of methods, problems and solutions have emerged. This project aims to settle fundamental questions in the interaction between these two fields.Read moreRead less
Social outcomes, behaviour and emotional well-being of adults with autism. It is recognised that autism results in substantial life-long disability. It is recognised that autism results in substantial life-long disability. Severe emotional and behavioural problems are likely to be a key factor in precluding adults with autism from work, independent living, social contact, and undermine their quality of life, thus increasing support needs. This project aims to address a major gap in our current knowledge - the association between severe emotional and behavioural problems in adults with autism and social outcomes. Identification of markers of adult outcomes aims to lead to an improved understanding of the pathways to better social outcomes, facilitating the development of specific interventions to provide much needed improvements in outcomes for adults with autism.Read moreRead less
Group orbits in garmonic analysis and ergodic theory. Researchers from many areas need a type of mathematical analysis which involves the behaviour of a system - which may be a set of data points - under repeated application of some operation or group of operations. The structures arising from this kind of process are known as group orbits. The project gives information about their nature. Two major types of orbits are considered, coming from actions of discrete groups on measure spaces, and from smooth actions of Lie groups on manifolds, where powerful geometric methods are available. The project will yield new understandings of entropy, and new approaches to Fourier analysis.Read moreRead less
New approaches to index theory. The laws of nature are often expressed by differential equations, involving their rates of change. If 'elliptic,' they have an 'index,' which is the number of solutions minus the number of constraints imposed. The Atiyah-Singer index theorem gives a striking calculation of this "index'. An extension is Fractional Index Theory, which has received international attention, having solved a fundamental open problem. A central aim is to investigate this further. Operator Integrals and Derivatives. The project is a contribution to the study of non-commutative differential and integral calculus. The novelty of the present project lies in the study of smoothness properties of functions whose domains and ranges are spaces of unbounded, non-commuting operators on some Hilbert space. The novelty of the present project lies in the study of smoothness properties of functions whose domains and ranges are spaces of unbounded, non-commuting operators on some Hilbert space. Our general approach will be based on a detailed investigation of properties of double operator integrals, which permit smoothness estimates of operator-functions. It can be expected that the new techniques generated will find further application in areas of mathematical physics and non-commutative geometry related to quantized calculus.

The area of mathematical analysis has, for over 200 years, proved its worth as part of the unseen 90%, giving us such important tools as Fourier analysis, statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. Australia is known as a world leader in mathematical analysis, and it is important for the country to maintain that edge in a number of key disciplines, so we can continue to participate in global technological advance. The project has an international focus which will enable that to happen. It will also provide training for the next generation of mathematicians. Read moreRead less
Thin combinatorial films for heat management in microelectronics. This project aims to provide a viable solution for heat management in microelectronics by using highly efficient Peltier devices made with thin combinatorial films. Heat generated by electric current, which is ubiquitous in microelectronic devices, has become increasingly problematic for high density charge-based logical circuitries. The project will significantly enhance the energy conversion efficiency of Peltier devices by optimising the interdependent electron and phonon transports, simultaneously, with a new concept of thin combinatorial films for heat management in microelectronic devices. This is expected to facilitate the development of novel materials in Australia, with access to a large global market.Read moreRead less

Mathematical science has proven a crucial platform for science and technology: it may have a long lead-time to application but its impacts are more profound than glamorous technical developments. Australia has an economic imperative to maintain investment in fundamental mathematics. Dynamical systems underpin a wide range of applications in physics, engineering, information science, finance and economics. This project will improve our capacity to model systems and to study their evolution, giving us better predictive power. It will keep Australia in the forefront of international research, providing a basis of expertise not otherwise available to Australian researchers and industry. Read moreRead less
Non-commutative analysis and differential calculus. This project is in an area of central mathematical importance and will lead to important scientific advances that will keep Australia at the forefront internationally in this field of research. There is an emphasis on international networking and we will collaborate with leading researchers in USA and France.
Structure and states of operator-algebraic dynamical systems. This project is in the general area of functional analysis, and more specifically operator theory, an area in which the University of Wollongong has an active research group and a strong international reputation. The investigators will study dynamical systems arising in combinatorial and number-theoretic situations, where the analogue of the "dynamics'' is provided by an action of the real line on an operator algebra. Thus the project ....Structure and states of operator-algebraic dynamical systems.
