Summary
Platelets are the richest source of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the body. Platelet ADAM10 regulates both the expression and function of the major platelet collagen receptor GPVI, and protective APP processing. Coagulation protein Factor X has a role in activation of ADAM10. This activation is disrupted in blood that has been treated with direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) rivaroxaban. This grant will investigate the implications for people taking rivaroxaban on regulation of APP and GPVI.

Summary
B lymphocytes are a specialised type of blood cells that produce antibodies in response to a pathogen or a vaccine. We have recently discovered that all mature B cells depend for their survival on a previously unknown protein called SPPL2A. This application will investigate the molecular mechanism through which SPPL2A contributes to the survival of B cells. We will also investigate if humans with currently unexplained B cell deficiency have mutations in SPPL2A.

Improving neuronal cell function with cell permeable copper complexes. Metal-based drugs offer an exciting new approach to treatment of neurodegeneration. However, little is known about how cells metabolise these drugs and this information is critical for further drug development. This project will determine how metal-based drugs are metabolised by neuronal cells and how this may result in therapeutic benefit.

Tobacco smoking remains the most common preventable cause of death and illness in Australia today. Smoking cessation programs are some of the most effective and cost effective strategies that can be undertaken in health care settings, including general practice. This project will test a new approach to supporting smoking cessation in general practice. This involves the practice nurse, GP and Quitline working in partnership to provide a flexible program of suport to meet the needs of smokers.
