Vulnerability, autonomy and justice. Vulnerable people require assistance and care. But what are our responsibilities in relation to the vulnerable? And how can we provide assistance and care while avoiding stereotyping or paternalism? This research will advance ethical theory and be useful in solving practical problems in health research and policy.
Ethical restoration after oppressive violence: a philosophical account. Contemporary political ethics has to face the question of how to repair relations that have broken down after crimes, oppression and political violence. Using the work of European and feminist philosophers to examine historical and recent cases including post-liberation France, post-genocide Rwanda and post-colonial Australasia and neighbouring countries, this project aims to develop a philosophical account of ethical restor ....Ethical restoration after oppressive violence: a philosophical account. Medical imaging is an essential part of our Australian modern health care system and plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment planning and decision making and assessment of treatment of patients. This project aims to maximize the benefit of federal government healthcare investment through intelligent biomedical system modelling in conjunction with multi-modality image analysis to extract crucial additional information for accurate diagnosis and improved treatment, which will not only lead to a major scientific advancement, but also deliver significant social benefits.Read moreRead less
How do we know what works: ethics and evidence in surgical research. This project will make surgery safer for patients by improving our understanding of evidence in surgery. We will look at the question "what works" in surgery. The resources we develop will help practitioners and regulators to better navigate and manage the complex ethical and practical challenges in this field.
A new understanding of responsibility in the ethics of human reproduction. New developments in reproductive medicine and prenatal testing technologies are transforming pregnancy and generating difficult moral and policy questions for parents and the Australian community. This project will provide a new framework for reproductive responsibility that helps to ensure a healthy start to life for all Australians.
An analysis of foetal imaging and the ethics of the selective termination of pregnancy. This project examines the impacts of routine obstetric ultrasound on the experience of pregnancy, focusing on the ethics of selective termination following diagnosis of abnormalities. The project contributes to the national research priority goal of a healthy start to life, by examining the ethical aspects of ensuring foetal health in Australia.
Socially Oriented Requirements Engineering - Software Engineering meets Ethnography. The project should lead to the design and development of better software/information and communications technologies in the homes of Australians, that encourage flexible social ineractions, and has been designed with the user in mind.
Agent-Based Simulation - New Approaches for Design and Prototyping. The project will improve the capacity of Australian companies to bring products to market more quickly where there are complex trade-offs between interacting actors. The simulation guidelines will help understand interaction in complex systems and the identification of important factors in the air traffic domain. The research will also preserve the leading position of Australian technology for high quality simulations of air tra ....Agent-Based Simulation - New Approaches for Design and Prototyping. The simulation guidelines will help understand interaction in complex systems and the identification of important factors in the air traffic domain. The research will also preserve the leading position of Australian technology for high quality simulations of air traffic control. The new methods will help Australian SMEs using agent technology, of which there are several.Read moreRead less
Escaping the concurrency trade-off: a new approach to enterprise software. Enterprise software manages the operations of all business and government organisations. Enterprise software manages the operations of all business and government organisations. Designers of this often rely on their intuition or luck, by using high-performance database facilities whose correctness is not guaranteed. This project will show designers how to use these facilities while still having the assurance that the data will not be corrupted. This will improve the quality of the data used by Australian enterprises, and thus improve their operations. Australian software designers will also benefit, as they will be able to produce software that combines high performance with assurance that concurrency errors will not occur.Read moreRead less
Women on liberty: from the early modern period to the enlightenment (1650-1800). Our modern ideals about liberty were forged in the great political debates of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but little is known about women’s participation in those debates. This project will be one of the first to examine early modern and enlightenment women’s writings on political, moral, and metaphysical concepts of liberty. It will do so by bringing together leading scholars in the field.
