This project will aid rapid assimilation of very large medical imaging datasets from different imaging devices, and will have clinical applications in diagnosis and treatment and improve patient care. The research, when extended to protein registration, will facilitate analysis of DNA and advance research in bioinformatics and biotechnology. The research could also be used for target recognition, mosaic construction, content-based retrieval, in remote sensing and multimedia. Benefits to Australia include the provision of a readily adaptable image registration program for patient care (e.g., early detection of cancers, dementia), cutting-edge research, high-quality training for students, and encouraging international research collaboration.Read moreRead less

A cross-disciplinary collaboration to develop a national system for real-time detection of Adverse Drug Reactions using linked Australian health data. Our aim is to use existing administrative health data in the evidence-based, cost-effective and privacy-respecting discovery of Adverse Drug Reactions. This research is of vital importance, since adverse reactions to medicines currently represent one of the leading causes of hospitalisation and death in Australia. In a groundbreaking collaboration ....A cross-disciplinary collaboration to develop a national system for real-time detection of Adverse Drug Reactions using linked Australian health data. Our aim is to use existing administrative health data in the evidence-based, cost-effective and privacy-respecting discovery of Adverse Drug Reactions. This research is of vital importance, since adverse reactions to medicines currently represent one of the leading causes of hospitalisation and death in Australia. In a groundbreaking collaboration, we have successfully shown that large linked, administrative data sets are sufficiently rich to enable discovery of adverse drug reactions, but our analytic tools are at an early developmental stage. The outcome of this project would be innovative, effective and sustainable analytic tools for the discovery of unexpected associations between drugs and medical events.Read moreRead less

Several electronic instruments monitor a baby's vital signs such as blood oxygen, blood pressure and heart rate. A major limitation in neonatal clinical management is that the data generated by these monitors is not integrated to enable the alerting of condition deterioration or early warning of possible condition onset. This project will develop a methodology and technology that supports the cross correlation of neonatal clinical and physiological data for complex neonatal medical alerts, through the use of agents within an event stream processor, resulting in higher survival rates.Read moreRead less

PET-CT which combines two imaging modalities in one device. While this technology is very new and has great potential in cancer and brain disorders, it also poses major challenges for information processing and transmission. We will address these challenges by developing advanced algorithms that optimally extract information from PET and CT using mathematical models that correct for the various sources of inaccuracy. Our research will put Australian biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals at the forefront of advanced medical imaging technology.Read moreRead less

Varying similarity metrics in indexing and retrieving high dimensional data. Many applications require varying distance metrics by putting a weight on different dimensions. Many applications require varying distance metrics by putting a weight on different dimensions. Taking an example in visual information retrieval, due to the subjective nature of similarity measurements, the distance metrics can vary between different users. The main problem with k nearest neighbour (k-nn) searches using weighted metrics in a high dimensional space is whether the searches can be done efficiently, since in an arbitrary distance metric the intersection between the k-nn sphere and the bounding envelopes of nodes in an index tree cannot be easily calculated. This project aims to seek a novel solution. It will create a great impact on and have many applications in high dimensional visual information retrieval, instance-based learning, complex analysis, non-parametric density estimation, etc.Read moreRead less

This research will overcome the urgent and significant burden in the routine clinical visualisation of multiple-modality biomedical image data, which are complex and exquisitely detailed from the new generation of high-resolution medical imaging scanners. Together with our industry partner RPA Hospital, we will produce 3D visualisation methodologies that will simplify and revolutionise the way biomedical data are visualised, analysed and interpreted by imaging specialists and disseminated to doctors and patients. Given the pivotal role that imaging plays in modern healthcare, this will improve diagnosis and assessment, and enhance Australia's leading position in the development of frontier technologies.Read moreRead less

The smart use of information to improve, promote and maintain good healthcare is a critical mission for our country. Cancer is a serious problem in Australian society and 1 in 4 individuals will be affected by it in their lifetime. Our research is focussed on two types of cancer - lung cancer and the lymphomas - and it will use IT in a novel way to extract important information from a very large biomedical data repository. We hope that it will improve personalised diagnosis and treatment in these cancers and provide new information on how some cancers spread and resist our usual treatments. We think our techniques will contribute to other research areas such as astronomy, agriculture, water/energy resources, and security.Read moreRead less
