Over the last decade, treatment of advanced periodontal disease has focussed on ways in which the damaged tissues may be regenerated. We now have gained considerable insight into the molecular and cellular events associated with periodontal regeneration. Despite efforts to induce regeneration through the selective use of growth and differentiation factors it is becoming obvious that the most significant factor in successful clinical outcomes is the recruitment of special cells to the site of damage which have the potential to repair tissue damage. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that occur in up to 77% of reproductive age women. They can result in a range of symptoms including pain and excessive menstrual bleeding and are the commonest single reason for hysterectomy. This project will investigate the function of the different cell types that make up the fibroid. Knowledge gained will be of use to identify new targets for treating fibroids to reduce the need for hysterectomy.

Summary
The development of scar tissue is a normal response to tissue injury. When airway and lung tissue is injured by exposure to irritants, scarring greatly diminishes the function of the lung to allow transfer of oxygen to the tissue. In severe disease, the scarring may be fatal. We discovered that two factors involved in formation of scar tissue neutralise each other's effects. We are examining this interaction in human lung to develop new treatments for scarring-related lung diseases.
