Gravity and quantum-limited measurements with a fundamental minimum length. This project aims to investigate the effects of a fundamental minimum length on the nature of gravity and on how accurately we can make measurements in our world. The key challenge is to combine our best theories of fundamental physics to model what happens at ultra-short distances. This project aims to investigate the effects of a fundamental minimum length on the nature of gravity and on how accurately we can make measurements in our world. The key challenge is to combine our best theories of fundamental physics to model what happens at ultra-short distances. This project will generate new knowledge at this interface by using a novel approach inspired by information theory. The expected outcomes are new connections between fundamental limitations on measurements, the nature of gravitation, and ultra-small-scale quantum physics. The benefit of this work is breaking the logjam in answering the most important open question in all of physics: how to unite quantum theory and gravitation.Read moreRead less

Summary
Quantum computation and relativistic quantum information. Quantum information theory has profound implications both for practical computing and for our fundamental understanding of the universe. This project will determine the viability of one particular quantum computing platform and also develop theoretical and experimental tools to probe the interface between quantum theory and relativity.
Banking System Competition and the Macro-economy. Australia has one of the most concentrated banking sectors in the world, generating concerns regarding its efficiency. This project aims to develop unified frameworks to understand and evaluate quantitatively how the structure of the banking industry affects the macro-economy and provide policy recommendations for establishing a healthy and efficient banking industry. This project expects to improve understanding of the welfare trade-off between ....Banking System Competition and the Macro-economy. This project expects to improve understanding of the welfare trade-off between bank competition and economic well-being to enable policymakers to better determine the optimal concentration of banking sector in Australia. This will enhance the productivity and international competitiveness of Australia’s financial system and the broader economy.Read moreRead less
A new theory of Aboriginal art. The paradigms developed by scholars have a huge impact on the value of art. After the Australian artworld repositioned Aboriginal art from the frame of 'primitive art' to that of contemporary art, the price of and market for Aboriginal art increased enormously. After the Australian artworld repositioned Aboriginal art from the frame of 'primitive art' to that of contemporary art, the price of and market for Aboriginal art increased enormously. However, Aboriginal art failed to penetrate the international contemporary artworld because the paradigms of contemporary art within which it was framed were outmoded. Through examining the production of Aboriginal art from the perspectives of its producers and recent globalised contemporary art practices, this project aims to develop a new theory of Aboriginal art that is more aligned with the thinking of current curators who set the agenda at the upper end of the market.Read moreRead less

Higher Representation Theory. Representation theory is a field of mathematics with applications across the breadth of mathematical study in fields as diverse as number theory and physics. The study of higher (or categorical) representation theory is a modern set of tools that provides new insights into representation theoretic phenomena. Representation theory is a field of mathematics with applications across the breadth of mathematical study in fields as diverse as number theory and physics. The study of higher (or categorical) representation theory is a modern set of tools that provides new insights into representation theoretic phenomena. This project aims to study categorified quantum groups and, in particular, the categorifications provided by diagrammatic algebras. The project aims to further develop the theory of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier (KLR) algebras, providing important foundational results for future research to build upon.Read moreRead less
Regimes of reading. The project analyses the ways in which reading and interpretation have been socially organised across a range of cultures, from ancient Rome to the contemporary world of virtual reality. It focuses in particular on conflict between different practices of reading in order to highlight the cultural assumptions underlying the uses of texts.
Multi-tier economic hierarchies: existence, structure, and optimal incentives. There exists a considerable gap between real-world economic organizations and the economic theory of the firm. This project provides formal theories of multi-tier hierarchies, thereby contributing to fill the gap. The project is expected to produce highest-quality research publishable in top-tier journals. This will, among others, enhance Australia's standing as a knowledge nation. Additional benefit comes from inter ....Multi-tier economic hierarchies: existence, structure, and optimal incentives. This project provides formal theories of multi-tier hierarchies, thereby contributing to fill the gap. The project is expected to produce highest-quality research publishable in top-tier journals. This will, among others, enhance Australia's standing as a knowledge nation. Additional benefit comes from international collaboration with high-calibre theorists such as the two partner investigators. The project would provide opportunities for communication between Australian economists and the partner investigators, as well as a launch pad for further collaboration in the future.Read moreRead less

Monetary policy and models of money, credit and banking. This project develops models with money and credit following recent developments in monetary theory with microfoundations. The objectives of the project are to understand the fundamental functions of credit, how credit affects the aggregate economy, and how credit affects the transmission of monetary policy.
Managing age in organisational context: a comparative study of the meaning of age among managers. Australians are currently being encouraged to work longer to maximise their contribution to the economy but they often report there are organisational barriers to doing so. This study offers a new approach to understanding age focusing on managers and offers a framework of effective strategies for employers in managing age.
