A rich information environment is in turn necessary to ensure liquidity and the minimisation of cost of capital. A greater understanding of what promotes a rich information environment, specifically through the activity of financial analysts, will assist in formulation of policies at both the Australian Stock Exchange and individual company level, and indeed at the government level given Federal and State Government initiatives to encourage the growth of corporate Australia.Read moreRead less

Expected outcomes include improved: capability within Government; understanding among Australian stakeholders; and integration with international approaches. Expected benefits include lower regulatory barriers to global emissions reductions, and fairer access to international markets for Australian producers. Read moreRead less

This project investigates, theoretically and empirically, how past and present reputation for monetary policy credibility influences a country's choice of exchange rate regime and its ability to borrow internationally in domestic currency. The inability of emerging market countries to borrow in domestic currency is an important source of global financial instability, and the study contributes to an understanding of how policymakers can better facilitate the process of international financial integration. By introducing new advances in the theory of reputation into models of exchange rate crises and examining lessons from Australian financial history, the research brings a fresh perspective to existing analyses of financial crises.Read moreRead less

While exchange rate movements are not readily predictable in the short run, long run changes in underlying real exchange rates are amenable to economic analysis using structural models. The clearer understanding of these forces, toward which this project is directed, will better guide investment in the region, including in Australia, and more importantly, it will better inform future policy debates surrounding currency movements.Read moreRead less

This project aims to examine the effects of income from international commodity price windfalls on peoples’ well-being. Exports of natural resources (iron, coal and copper) are an important source of income for the Australian economy. International prices for these commodities have declined in recent years, lowering national income. The project will analyse both objective and subjective measures of well-being at both the cross-country time-series and the sub-national levels, tailored to the Australian economy. It is expected that the project’s findings will benefit academia, public policy makers and everyday people. The project will inform academics and policy makers about how income from international commodity price windfalls affects peoples' well-being.Read moreRead less

Cycles in the housing market and its interaction with other economic and financial market variables may have enormous effects on the Australian economy. Despite this there is little research on the interactions between housing and the macroeconomy. This project examines these issues. The implications of the research extend to three broad areas. The first is monetary policy by understanding housing prices, inflation and interest rates linkages. Second, constructing formal models including housing may provide a means of testing the implications of policies such as the first home owner grant or reductions in housing specific taxes. Finally, financial markets may benefit by understanding of the role of property in a diversified portfolio.Read moreRead less
