The aim of this study is to address the issue of how to measure liquidity and to provide a framework in which a liquidity risk management policy may be established which benchmarks the proposed measure of liquidity. This research may be expected to lead the policy debate in Australia as to how insurance companies may satisfy the APRA guidelines.Read moreRead less

In a novel approach for credit scoring we will build a model using current, right-censored, rather than historic data, incorporating loans that are not yet repaid but are underway and clearly have a length of loan longer than observed. This approach has the immense advantage of being able to reflect contemporary borrowing patterns in the model, rather than relying on historic trends.

This project aims to address the significant worldwide challenge of how to safeguard financial wellbeing at older ages. In doing so it aims to investigate three important and interconnected influences on retirement preparation: flexible choice architecture, trust formation and effective communication. The project aims to use a combination of innovative modelling, experimental and field-based approaches. The principal expected outcomes are insights into the factors that guide superannuation choice, build trust with superannuation providers, and ensure clear and effective communication with members.Read moreRead less

Approximately 15,000 individuals in Australia are currently HIV infected. In this study we will model a new approach to treat HIV in which the patient's own cells are used as the therapy by incorporating an anti-HIV gene. These cells are then re-introduced into the patient.
The strong mathematical focus of this project, and its application to a promising approach against HIV, will place Australia at the forefront of the mathematics of gene research and contribute to the National Priority Area of Promoting and Maintaining Good Health and the Priority Goal of Preventative Healthcare.

Risk and Prudential Regulation and Supervision of Australian Financial Institutions. The project seeks to enhance the effectiveness of prudential regulation and supervision of financial institutions (FIs) by examining the risk of FIs, as reflected in default risk premiums on FI international debt issues and variability of revenue/profitability measures, and the effect of broadening FI activities and the shift towards fee/commission income on FI risk. This forms the basis for the development and ....Risk and Prudential Regulation and Supervision of Australian Financial Institutions. This forms the basis for the development and testing of statistical early warning systems of impending financial problems in Australian FIs. The models are compared with examiner rating systems currently used in prudential supervision.Read moreRead less

By linking together specialists in finance, banking and religious history, with the Muslim Community Cooperative (Australia), this project explores communication and mutual benefit between international Islamic finance and conventional Western finance. It will propose new financial structures and instruments to expand the scope of Islamic finance, to maximise lending and investment opportunities in Australia, and to promote interaction between the Islamic and conventional financial sectors. The project will enable Australian researchers to work with international authorities in Islamic finance, promoting dialogue between Islamic and other groups, and increase investment and development within the Australian financial market.Read moreRead less
Innovative mathematical modelling to determine incorporation of gene therapy in different cell lineages; Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) as a model setting. Gene therapy is a promising therapeutic that is being developed to address genetic diseases and viral infections such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This project will produce mathematical models of how gene therapy delivered to one type of cell can differentiate into the desired end target and impact disease.
Improving the modelling of insolvency risk and financial health assessment of global companies using hybrid intelligent techniques. The social and economic impacts of corporate collapses are severe, and much research has modelled financial health and insolvency risk of companies. Most research, however, uses simple and out-dated financial ratios used by Altman (1968), and attempts to develop a universal model valid for specific (non-global) markets. Our approach is to improve the relevance of the information provided to the models (including measures of strategy, recent accounting metrics, global context). We also challenge the merits of a universal model by developing and testing a novel hybrid intelligent approach combining neural networks, genetic algorithms and self-organising maps, applicable to global markets.Read moreRead less

The development of Distributed Simulations is recognised as an increasingly important part of training, scientific modelling and acquisitions in the defense community. While the benefits of simulation are well understood the actual development costs and complexity remain prohibitive, requiring expert programming skills and training. These limitations are greatly impeding the wider adoption of simulation in the broader business community.
To address these issues this proposal investigates the means of applying simulation technologies to a domain in which user-configurable desktop tools, such as spreadsheets and word processors, are more the norm - for example financial modelling.
We aim to extend the development of tools and techniques that support the desktop use of simulation and to assess the relative merits of these approaches. Our eventual goal is to provide approachable simulation services, without adversely compromising their inherent power, to a far wider range of application domains.

The project's insights will assist policy makers to assess, progress and promote approaches to global economic and governance policy reforms. AIFRS adoption disturbs the financial markets equilibria previously struck under Australian accounting standards. Understanding this impact helps underpin micro- and macro- economic strategies and policy developments relying upon the role of financial reporting. It also assists capital markets to adapt to the new reporting environment, thus increasing capital allocation effectiveness and efficiency.
Australia's position as an early IFRS adopting nation enables the project to facilitate Australia's international leadership in global economic policy development. Read moreRead less
