Household mortgage choice: theoretical and empirical evidence. A house is often the largest component of household assets, and financing its purchase involves choosing a mortgage product from many alternatives. Inefficiencies and incompleteness in mortgage markets have important consequences. This project uncovers theoretical and empirical evidence on why Australians choose particular mortgage products.
Understanding the Behaviour and Impact of Bond Markets. An improved understanding of the way in which the timing of transactions on financial markets interact enables better choices to be made in terms of designing market systems and conventions. The US Treasury market is arguably the most important market in the world, and uses an expandable limit order book. Better understanding of this market will help in choices about new system design, and in how news transmitted through this market may im ....Understanding the Behaviour and Impact of Bond Markets. An improved understanding of the way in which the timing of transactions on financial markets interact enables better choices to be made in terms of designing market systems and conventions. The US Treasury market is arguably the most important market in the world, and uses an expandable limit order book. Better understanding of this market will help in choices about new system design, and in how news transmitted through this market may impact on other markets. In particular this project will consider the role of the microstructure of the US Treasury market in the 2007-2008 financial crisis.Read moreRead less
Navigating an uncertain antimicrobial future: a sociological study. This project aims to develop a unique understanding of what governs antibiotic use in the health sector and how it can be governed more effectively. The project will critically assess the implementation of governance, and how regulatory and legislative environments may resonate or contrast with the demands of practice. This will support the development of strategies to improve antibiotic use and reduce resistance.
Ethos and Topos: A Philosophical Investigation of the Ethics and Politics of Place. This project will contribute to the public and academic understanding of the way our sense of place relates to our sense of who we are, and the ethical implications of that relation. The outcomes of the project will have an application to a wide range of applied and policy areas in which questions of identity and belonging are at issue. It will connect directly with ongoing public discussion about a number of cr ....Ethos and Topos: A Philosophical Investigation of the Ethics and Politics of Place. This project will contribute to the public and academic understanding of the way our sense of place relates to our sense of who we are, and the ethical implications of that relation. The outcomes of the project will have an application to a wide range of applied and policy areas in which questions of identity and belonging are at issue. It will connect directly with ongoing public discussion about a number of critical contemporary issues relating to ideas of nationhood and community, our connection to land and environment, and our sense of identity and belonging.Read moreRead less
Change Detection in Causal Relationships and Measurement of Systemic Risk. Empirical measures of interconnectedness between financial institutions based on tests of Granger causality are currently used in detecting systemic risk. Empirical measures of interconnectedness between financial institutions based on tests of Granger causality are currently used in detecting systemic risk. However, researchers need to define periods of calm and stress exogenously in order to implement these tests appropriately. This project aims to develop a new procedure to identify changes in causal relationships and the timing of these changes. The new approach has the potential to be a significant improvement in the real-time identification of emerging turmoil in financial markets and provide an improved method for the detection of systemic risk. The new test procedure will be implemented using data for financial and non-financial institutions across Europe, the US and Australia.Read moreRead less
Remote presence for guidance on physical tasks. This project aims to transform remote collaboration on physical tasks. Current systems for remote collaboration on physical tasks are not as effective as working face-to-face. This could be overcome by sharing non-verbal cues, designing systems to account for cultural issues, and using a new model of communication. This project will develop theories and interaction methods for remote guidance based on natural non-verbal communication cues and cultu ....Remote presence for guidance on physical tasks. This project aims to transform remote collaboration on physical tasks. Current systems for remote collaboration on physical tasks are not as effective as working face-to-face. This could be overcome by sharing non-verbal cues, designing systems to account for cultural issues, and using a new model of communication. This project will develop theories and interaction methods for remote guidance based on natural non-verbal communication cues and cultural issues. This project is expected to benefit industries with widely distributed multi-cultural workforces such as mining, defence and medicine.Read moreRead less

Surfing is a major industry in Australia, contributing $11billion to the economy. It has high active participation levels; but locations with good surfing conditions are limited and becoming crowded. New technologies, such as the circular-track wave pool, are required to provide safe environments for surfing with controllable high quality waves. The research in this proposal will considerably advance knowledge of wave mechanics; provide the ability to design a commercially-viable wave pool and ensure the Australian surfing industry and sport continue to expand. The project will thus result in major scientific, economic and social benefits for Australia.Read moreRead less
Calculus in the real world: transforming the way we teach mathematics in primary education. This project will demonstrate that, with the aid of computers, primary school students can solve university-level advanced mathematics problems. After studying with multi-media teaching materials and specialised software, the students will undertake a university engineering examination - and pass with flying colours!

Collaborative remote access will be developed for sophisticated instrumentation, including instruments planned for the Replacement Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database service with cross disciplinary content and versatile visualisation and analysis capabilities will further exemplify smart information use. The internet services will ultimately harness the Grid, enabling linkage into other national and international Grid systems. Encompassing physics, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry, and catalysing interaction across these disciplines, the MMSN will impact all five National Research Priority 3 goals.Read moreRead less
A project to examine and strengthen health care incident disclosure communication. Incidents occur frequently in health care, killing or maiming around 18,000 people per year. This study will map the experiences of patients and clinicians of conducting clinical incident discussions to enhance understanding of post-incident communication dynamics and develop models that facilitate incident communication.
