This project addresses a fundamental question in current debates over nationhood - on what ideological and discursive bases nations are formed - by studying the roots of modern national consciousness in early modern France. It will examine the survival, indeed the reinforcement of particularist ideas about the French people and France within the universalist context of Enlightenment thought. Drawing on data bases constituted in the investigators' earlier research, it will study representations of the nation and national character in literary, philosophical, educational and political writings, and the role of the rapidly expanding communications system in the dissemination of these ideas.Read moreRead less

Samuel Beckett and the French Literary Tradition: Bilingualism as Method. Moving between French and English, Samuel Beckett's bilingual writing practice offers a unique record of how the artistic imagination engages with the experience of migration. Moving between French and English, Samuel Beckett's bilingual writing practice offers a unique record of how the artistic imagination engages with the experience of migration. To date, studies of Beckett concentrate on his involvement with the Anglophone expatriate communities and the French literary coteries of post-war Paris. They neglect, however, the impact of Beckett's grounding in the French literary tradition from the sixteenth century onwards. By filling this gap, this project aims to quantify how French and English cultural heritages are processed differently in the French and English versions of his works. The project will illuminate how national literatures are reshaped through cultural translation.Read moreRead less

More interested in the British stories of conquest and settlement, historians have largely neglected an important episode in Australian history, the French scientific expedition to New Holland (1800-1804), led by Nicolas Baudin and commissioned by Bonaparte. As well as making Australians aware of the diversity of their past, and thereby contributing in our multi-cultural society to debates concerning national identity, the project will add significantly to knowledge of early encounters between the Europeans and Aborigines, and to the scientific history of our continent. The Franco-Australian nature of the project will have the particular benefit of strengthening and creating social and collaborative links between Australia and France.Read moreRead less

This project aims to reconstruct popular reading trends to revise understanding of European enlightenment and the transformational impact of print. Through an innovative, industry-wide digital survey of unprecedented scope and sophistication, tracking millions of copies of thousands of titles and all sectors of the book trade – legal, pirate and contraband – it asks: What books were widely read? Where were they produced and consumed? What was the relative scale and nature of key parts of the trade – notably religious and illegal publishing? How cosmopolitan was popular reading? The project also aims to reflect on its digital methods and develop transferable technologies for studying print’s impact across time and space.Read moreRead less
