The facility will be used by the collaborating universities to investigate adsorption and interface properties with great precision, and to develop new and improved technologies for coal and mineral processing, saline water utilisation, water desalination, energy production and environment protection. In particular, the project will investigate innovative ways of using ion-interface interactions in saline water for cleaning coal and recovering value minerals by flotation, and for improving dissolved air flotation used in water treatment and desalination to produce drinking water. The project will further investigate novel ways of capturing CO2, storing natural gases and hydrogen, and tailoring nutrient nano-crystals for foliar delivery.Read moreRead less

This research addresses a key challenge in gas separation crucial to our energy future and environmental sustainability, while harnessing the potential of carbide derived carbons. The project has a multitude of benefits for Australia, not only because it contributes to on-going research on carbon dioxide sequestration and utilization of alternate fuels, but because it will see a new generation of Australian researchers trained in multidisciplinary cutting-edge research while addressing several areas of national priority, including reducing emissions, breakthrough sciences, development of frontier technologies and advanced materials, and thereby creating new opportunities for industry.Read moreRead less
Understanding the mechanism of Wolbachia-mediated antiviral protection. Insects are involved in the transmission of many viral diseases of both plants and animals. A considerable number of these diseases have adverse effects for public health or cause large economic losses in agriculture. We were the first to discover that a common bacteria protects insects from virus infection. Knowledge of the mechanisms used by the bacteria to interfere with virus accumulation will facilitate novel strategies ....Understanding the mechanism of Wolbachia-mediated antiviral protection. The findings of this project will enable Australian researchers and industry to design innovative approaches to control diseases that are transmitted by insects.Read moreRead less
Income insecurity in Australia: who is feeling the pinch and why? This project aims to measure and investigate the drivers of income insecurity in Australia. It will provide an evaluation of whether income growth is sufficient to compensate for any welfare loss due to higher income risk and the effectiveness of government taxes and transfers in alleviating income risks for different population sub-groups.
Investigation of key factors affecting the polarisation based diagnostics of power transformers. To avoid system wide power interruptions, major assets in the electricity network must be always operating satisfactorily. One of the key assets in the electricity network is the power transformer. Currently many transformers are over 50 years old and failure of a transformer may result in long interruptions in supply and the loss of millions of dollars in revenue. The ageing of transformers needs to be properly monitored to avoid catastrophic failures. This project will provide an innovative solution for the better understanding of the ageing processes of transformers and help
managers make correct decisions for maintenance and replacement strategies.

Relative Permeability in Coal. This project aims to deliver a better model for coal relative permeability to improve the management of coal seam gas reservoirs. Coal relative permeability is a key factor in reservoir models; however, current understanding of relative permeability is wrong for coal systems and predictions based on it are misleading. This project aims to deliver a better model for coal relative permeability to improve the management of coal seam gas reservoirs. Coal relative permeability is a key factor in reservoir models; however, current understanding of relative permeability is wrong for coal systems and predictions based on it are misleading. Relative permeability is currently carried over from conventional gas reservoirs as a function of the degree of water saturation only. This misunderstands the physical differences between coal and other rocks as gas reservoirs, fails to recognise the determinants of coal relative permeability, and misrepresents the flow system. This project seeks to provide a phenomenologically-based understanding and functional relationship for coal-relative permeability based on the principles than govern physical flow interactions.Read moreRead less
Sustainable operation of transformers with better understanding of technical and economic constraints. Transformer failure can be devastating to consumers and network service providers, costing from thousands to millions of dollars in transformer replacement and lost productivity. To avoid such catastrophic failures, the goal of this project will be to develop new methods that can maximise transformer usage and minimise cost before failure occurs.
Rapidly Locating Items in Distribution Networks with Process-Driven Nodes. Safety-critical product recalls are a major public health issue in Australia. Recent extortion attempts involving poisoning of chocolate bars, paracetamol tablets and biscuits have demonstrated the urgent need for improved ways of locating commercial products that have been released into the community. Existing product recall tools are effective only within regulated manufacturing and warehousing facilities. This project ....Rapidly Locating Items in Distribution Networks with Process-Driven Nodes. This project will develop novel techniques for locating items in large-scale distribution networks driven by complex logistic processes. The outcomes of the project will make it easier to rapidly and accurately pinpoint product locations outside controlled facilities, thus contributing to both cost savings and public safety.Read moreRead less
Condition Assessment of Medium-Voltage XLPE-Insulated Cables Degraded by Water Treeing. In Australia degraded underground XLPE cables are causing disruption of electricity supplies and high community costs. There is no reliable non-invasive technique for prediction of cable condition to optimise cable replacement and refurbishment.
