This project furthers our knowledge of the workings of the political, military and security scene in one of our most strategically important neighbours, the PRC. The better we understand the PRC and how it responds in times of military disruption the more likely we are to be able to further Australian interests within this large market and ensure continued national security. This project will use oral history to record the past and present experiences of lesbian and gay Australians, making this material accessible through the National Library of Australia, an online exhibition and a television documentary series. The project will inform and enrich Australian history and add a new dimension to contemporary debates.

Raising and Solving New Questions in China's Late-Imperial Demographic History, and their Economic and Environmental Implications. Examining China's premodern demographic history shows that age-specific rates of births and deaths are a crucial element usually missing in reconstructing the local histories needed to refine nationwide generalizations. They also raise unanticipated questions, relating for example to diet, stress, and disease . The extensive data on ?virtuous women? in local gazettee ....Raising and Solving New Questions in China's Late-Imperial Demographic History, and their Economic and Environmental Implications. Examining China's premodern demographic history shows that age-specific rates of births and deaths are a crucial element usually missing in reconstructing the local histories needed to refine nationwide generalizations. They also raise unanticipated questions, relating for example to diet, stress, and disease . The extensive data on ?virtuous women? in local gazetteers, never previously utilized, show wide local variations in expectancy of life. The project will determine parts of this spatial pattern, and that of fertility where information is systematic enough. This project aims to study the desirability of diplomatic interventions and practices to achieve ‘smart power’ results in an era where ‘hard power’ military intervention is often a disproportionately large, reflex response to global security threats.
