The Evolution of Social Movements. Social movements are important sources of political change, serving as a catalyst for citizen engagement and new policy agendas. Not enough is known, however, about the life cycles of social movements themselves. This project will increase our knowledge of how people engage in non-institutional politics and how such engagement can be sustained over time. Not enough is known, however, about the life cycles of social movements themselves. This project will increase our knowledge of how people engage in non-institutional politics and how such engagement can be sustained over time. The widespread disenchantment with institutional politics among young people in Australia makes this project particularly pressing. It will also help train a new generation of social movement scholars and develop and apply methodologies that can be used in other social movement research.Read moreRead less
Gender, peacebuilding and the politics of space: a critical examination of United Nations peacebuilding practices. More than half of all peace agreements fail within five years. In response to this dismal statistic, the United Nations (UN) recently began to prioritise gender matters in peacebuilding operations, recognising that gender equality is key to building sustainable peace. This project examines how gender justice is addressed in United Nations peacebuilding policy and practice.
Expanding equality: A historical perspective on developments and dilemmas in contemporary Australian social democracy. This project will be the first to analyse how successive Labor governments’ policy perspectives on equality (including class, gender, race, sexuality, technological and regional inequality) have changed and expanded over time. It will throw new light on contemporary Australian Labor Party at a time when some critics accuse Labor of betraying its egalitarian traditions due to the influence of neoliberal ideology, while others accuse Labor of neglecting workers by pursuing minority social issues. It will provide a distinctive Australian contribution to the international literatures on the crisis of social democracy (by exploring the role of equality policy developments in that crisis) and on how inequality is best conceived and addressed in policy.Read moreRead less
Gender after conflict: a gendered analysis of the international community's engagement in post-conflict zones. This project aims to contribute to the better understanding of women's policy machinery in Korea and Australia in order to develop more effective policymaking and implementation. This topic is theoretically and empirically under researched. The project, as a major comparative study on women's policies in two countries will make a significant contribution to the understanding of women's policy making process in a specific national context. This research will investigate the relevance of national machineries for the advancement of women. Appropriate mechanisms through which the mainstreaming of gender can take place are considered, and the levels of governance involved - the relationship between gender mainstreaming and state structures, and the effect of this relationship on policy implementation will be examined. Thus, this research will contribute to the better understanding of how and by what processes women's interests are represented to the state policy making structures.Read moreRead less
