Stochastic modelling of genetic regulatory networks with burst process. This project will develop the next generation of stochastic modelling to study the fundamental principles of genetic regulation. Simulations will yield deeper insight into the origin of bistability and oscillation in gene networks.
Transforming tobacco policy to deliver societal benefits. This project aims to develop new regulatory options for tobacco to minimise the legal market while avoiding the adverse societal and economic impacts of transferring consumer demand to illegal tobacco products. It addresses a significant current concern about a growing illegal tobacco market and seeks to improve understanding of the impact of tobacco control policies on the illegal market, and the societal impacts. The project also seeks ....Transforming tobacco policy to deliver societal benefits. The project also seeks to draw insights from illicit drug policy to understand potential consequences of greater restrictions on the legal tobacco market. The expected outcomes include an enhanced monitoring system for illicit tobacco and policy recommendations to achieve government goals of reducing smoking rates.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop new analysis methods associated to the Schrodinger operator, and to solve several challenging problems regarding dispersive partial differential equations (PDE). Long-time dynamics of PDE solutions are a key goal in both pure and applied mathematics, and have been extensively studied by leading mathematicians and mathematical physicists. However, it is unknown how to investigate large solutions when the order of the PDE's nonlinearity is low. This project expects to develop new methods to attack such problems. The results of the project will be of great importance in mathematics and physics, as many fundamental physical models in areas such as optics, fluid mechanics and quantum mechanics fit the paradigm.Read moreRead less
What counts is what is counted: performance measurement and its consequences. Measuring public sector performance is important as it potentially improves services and saves money, but it has become increasingly time and resource consuming. This project will analyse performance measurement and its consequences, and generate information on how governments can contain its growth and reduce its undesirable consequences.
Increasing internet energy and cost efficiency by improving higher-layer protocols. Australians rely heavily on our telecommunications infrastructure due to our geographic dispersion. We are also very susceptible to climate change, given our reliance on agriculture. Information technology is consuming a rapidly increasing fraction of our power and our budget. Australians rely heavily on our telecommunications infrastructure due to our geographic dispersion. We are also very susceptible to climate change, given our reliance on agriculture. Information technology is consuming a rapidly increasing fraction of our power and our budget. This research will help to reverse both those trends, by finding novel and practical ways to use our infrastructure more efficiently, and to minimise its energy use. This will enable the Australian telecommunications industry to provide better service (including to Australian industries and rural communities) at lower economic and environmental cost. This project will put Australia on the international stage as a leading contributor to energy-efficient internet technology.Read moreRead less
Curvature flows and spectral estimates. Curvature flows are a class of geometrically motivated equations, modelled on the heat equation. Recently, researchers have developed new methods for studying the regularity of solutions to these equations, and applied them to a different problem, that of estimating quantities depending on the smaller eigenvalues of a Schroedinger operator. This project builds on the early success of this research and will produce a new understanding of the behaviour of ei ....Curvature flows and spectral estimates. This project builds on the early success of this research and will produce a new understanding of the behaviour of eigenvalues, establish sharp estimates for spectral quantities, particularly on manifolds with curvature bounds, and find optimal conditions under which non-compact solutions to curvature flows are stable.Read moreRead less
Easing urban congestion through intelligent use of distributed information. Vehicle-to-vehicle wireless communication can be a solution to road traffic congestion and control without enormous additional infrastructure costs. This project will investigate the fundamental properties of such solution and to devise the practical policies and protocols resulting in interacting game-like behaviours.

The proposal aims to advance our understanding of how metabolism (and resulting metabolites) regulate the expression of genes, and investigate how these processes dictate the interaction of microbiota with the immune system. The project is expected to generate transformative knowledge of gene regulation, a fundamental process for cellular function, and decipher how the microbiome yeast Candida albicans interacts with immune cells and bacteria. By utilising a powerful combination of molecular and systems biology with molecular genetics and imaging, the project outcomes should foster interdisciplinary collaborations and build capacity for fundamental and applied research to benefit academia and industry, locally and globally.Read moreRead less
