Using a combination of genetic and molecular techniques in the model plant Arabidopsis, this project will characterise a novel locus, FLH that enhances the response to vernalization. The identification of FLH will significantly enhance our understanding of flowering time pathways, and may lead to the generation of plant varieties designed to flower faster or slower than usual.Read moreRead less
Genetic control of flowering and photoperiodism in pea. The timing of flowering in many plant species is strongly influenced by photoperiod. The mechanisms by which photoperiod controls flowering will be investigated using the garden pea as a model system. New pea mutants impairing photoperiod responses will be identified and characterized, and photoperiod response genes from Arabidopsis will be mapped and used for expression studies in pea. Novel photoprotective mechanisms and functional biodiversity of high light tolerance in the model alga Chlamydomonas. Most plants have limited capacity to avoid high light (HL) stress which commonly accompanies drought and high temperature stress. Most plants have limited capacity to avoid high light (HL) stress which commonly accompanies drought and high temperature stress. We will identify novel genes and proteins that underlie diverse mechanisms of photoprotection in unique very high light resistant (VHLR) mutants in the alga Chlamydomonas and develop new tools to screen other plants for these attributes. Depending on progress, we expect to express them in the higher plant Arabidopsis as a first step towards utilization of VHLR genes for crop improvement. Understanding the mechanisms conferring HL photoprotection is a research priority in plant sciences and will further strengthen Australia's innovative contributions to the internationally networked Chlamydomonas Genome Project.Read moreRead less

Light is an important determinant of plant architecture and productivity and we need to know more about how development is regulated by light in this important plant group. The natural light environment faced by plants is complex and varies with crop density, season and time of day. Understanding the interaction of photoreceptors and plant hormones in the control of growth is vital for manipulating crops to meet changing agronomic requirements. Training of students in state-of-the art techniques and the generation of new germplasm for use by other researchers and plant breeders will be other significant outcomes of the project.Read moreRead less

Plants make starch, sucrose, cell walls (fibre), oil, organic acids, vitamins and other products of great economic and social importance. The partitioning of carbon resources into such products determines crop productivity and quality. This partitioning is strongly influenced by nutrients, water and salinity. The powerful genomics resources of Arabidopsis including the new discipline of metabolomics, will be deployed to understand the regulation of carbon partitioning in leaves and to discover genes that direct partitioning. National research capability will be enhanced and new resources will be generated to breed crops with improved yield potential and product quality under varied environmental conditions.Read moreRead less

Our research will discover how karrikins work at the molecular level in plant cells. Our discoveries will be applied to improve growth of crop plants, to stimulate germination of weeds so that they can be eradicated, and in restoration ecology to revegetate degraded land such as minesites.
