The response of the world's largest ice mass to climate change is important because melting leads to a rise in sea level. Our ability to predict changes in ice volume and sea level under a warming climate, will be enhanced by better understanding of past ice sheet responses to changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Improved numerical models now exist that allow realistic simulations of Antarctic ice. These models will be developed further and constrained against existing and new field evidence for the Last Glacial Cycle (last 125,000 years), the period for which we can best define past ice sheet behaviour.Read moreRead less

Some of these ice-cores include sections of refrozen water formed from sub-glacial Antarctic lake water. This project will use naturally occurring lead and strontium isotopic tracers to fingerprint impurities in the ice, because they have the potential to simultaneously signal the timing and location of past episodes of climate change. This will lead to an improvement in our understanding of the processes that cause these changes.Read moreRead less
Detecting change in the outlet glaciers of East Antarctica using seismology. This work aims to establish a way of detecting change in the great outlet glaciers of East Antarctica by analysing the small vibrations made by moving water or by cracking and sliding ice. This work aims to establish a way of detecting change in the great outlet glaciers of East Antarctica by analysing the small vibrations made by moving water or by cracking and sliding ice. Change in these glaciers is very significant because they hold back over 10 m of potential future sea level rise, but many melt and movement processes are hidden from satellite view. Expected outcomes include a semi-automated approach for remote area glacier monitoring using seismic signals, and recommendations for cost-effective future instrument deployments in key areas of East Antarctica. The new capability will be world-leading and pragmatic, enabling the risks of accelerated future coastal inundation affecting Australia to be better anticipated.Read moreRead less
Microscale evolution of deformed rocks and glaciers. Scientific outcomes from this research have significant implications for predictions on material properties and are applicable to rock behaviour in mineralised systems, a focus of Australia's minerals industry, and the development of new materials for the Australian manufacturing industries. It will help maintain Australia's excellent international research reputation in the fields of microstructural geology and glaciology.

Microstructures related to nano-materials and visible up to the scale of a thin section, are important tools for any material scientist, geologist or glaciologist. Microstructural evolution underpins how these disciplines unravel grain-scale structures, deformation conditions and mechanisms to estimate the intensity or amount of deformation. This project will allow us to better interpret microstructural evolution, in a range of natural, organic and composite materials, by using integrated laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. With these results we will model the conditions that prevail in composite materials, in glaciers and apply them to processes operating in of the Earth's crust.Read moreRead less
Growth and Decay of ice sheets during glacial cycles:the example of Europe. The proposal is to develop a comprehensive model for the growth and decay of the ice sheets of Europe during the last glacial cycle, using a combination of diverse field evidence with geophysical modelling. The outcomes provide boundary conditions for climate models (times of inception and decay, ice limits, ice thickness) including processes driving climate as well as constraints on the Earth's mantle viscosity. Thus the project contributes to the quantitative characterisation of both climate change and planetary structure. In an Australian context, these outcomes form important elements in the development of predictive models for sea-level change.Read moreRead less

The calving activity of the Antarctic ice shelves is one of the major indicators of global climate change. Global warming induced by an increase in atmospheric CO2 will affect the Antarctic Ice Sheet, primarily in form of disintegration of the Antarctic ice shelves surrounding the continent. The processes of calving on the ice shelves may lead to a substantial increase of sea level around the world, with devastating effects on the continental coasts and low-lying islands. The method of remote acoustic observations investigated in this project is a new approach to the problem of creating an efficient and cost effective system to monitor rifting and calving of the Antarctic ice shelves.
