Water is Australia's most limiting resource. This research will contribute to the sustainable management of groundwater resources in the regional and rural areas of the Lower Murrumbidgee catchment, an important agricultural and horticultural region of Australia. Strategies for sustainable use of water resources will be improved by understanding the impacts of irrigation on groundwater quality and aquifer extractions. The project will train new scientists in current and new groundwater techniques and improve strategic linkages between the Industry and University sectors through support of student research and a Linkage Fellowship for the key industry partner participant.Read moreRead less

Agricultural and urban development increases demands on groundwater resources. The sustainable use of groundwater requires a thorough knowledge of hydrogeology. This project addresses the origins, age, and geochemical evolution of groundwater in the Murray Basin, in particular constraining groundwater flow patterns, aquifer-aquitard interaction, water-rock interaction, and groundwater-surface water interactions both under present day and previous climatic conditions. The results of this project will ensure that this groundwater resource can be more effectively used and managed sustainably over the long term. In particular, historical responses of the system will be used to predict the effects of landuse or climate changes.Read moreRead less

Numerical modelling of coupled deformation, fluid flow and heat flow in modern and ancient rifts. Computer modeling of geological processes is increasingly important to mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, to hazard prediction (e.g. earthquakes) and to plate tectonics. Because it is difficult to understand geological processes from ancient rocks, we will use new computer models to study fluid circulation in an active volcanic fault zone in New Zealand, where many of the parameters obscured in ancient rocks can be measured directly. We will determine processes of fluid migration that contributed to the formation of mineral deposits in ancient rocks, such as those mined in eastern Australia for gold. The project also has implications for discovery and development of energy resources including fossil fuels and geothermal waters.Read moreRead less

Much of the Australian landscape is subject to a dry and evaporative climate, making it very difficult to use conventional geochemical techniques to estimate past temperatures, even on short timescales of tens to hundreds of years. The application of a new isotopic technique to preserved carbonate minerals (soil carbonate, shells in rivers, lakes and the ocean) avoids the difficulty of this variable evaporation, and directly measures past temperatures. This will have a profound effect on our understanding of environmental changes on both short and long time scales, and permit a better understanding of the hydrological balances within the landscape.Read moreRead less
Soil erosion and river system response to climate change and early human activity in Australia. This project will provide a much needed quantitative understanding of how soils and rivers have responded and adapted to climate change and human activity in Australia. The outcomes will inform models to predict how our environment is likely to adapt to new conditions in the future as a result of indirect (global warming) and direct (intensive land use) human-related stresses. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme assists in underwriting the production of $3 billion of agricultural products in the Murray-Darling Basin each year by providing a reliable source of water west of the Great Dividing Range, while Hydro-electric generation from the Scheme is worth annually several hundred million dollars and provides 70% of the renewable energy supplied to the eastern mainland grid, thereby avoiding 5Mt of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This study will ensure the ongoing sustainable and efficient management of the Schemes water resources in response to predicted climate variability and most importantly, severe drought.
