Summary
Cervical cancer is caused by a virus and current treatments have not improved for many years. We have performed a screen and identified new drug targets and here we will examine one of these using a drug that has perviously been developed for other cancers. Our preliminary data shows cervical cancer is highly sensitive to this drug and there are few side-effects. We will examine how it works and if it results in permanent protection from new cancers.

There is an alarming increase in mouth cancer in young patients who have never smoked. This is a debilitating and potentially fatal cancer without many treatment options. If the patient survives, the quality of life is usually very poor. Our team of medical, genetic, and mathematics experts are dedicated to finding the cause, and developing new treatments, for young non-smoking patients affected by this devastating cancer.

Patients treated for head and neck cancer commonly experience pain, disfigurement, eating difficulties, depression and fatigue, undermining confidence and quality of life. This study aims to help patients self-manage their ongoing health problems following completion of treatment. Facial palsy is a devastating condition which has a very significant psychological and cosmetic impact. A simple and effective treatment does not exist for facial palsy. Our research goal is use state-of-the-art technology to define the types and the severity of the underlying nerve injury so that effective treatments can be developed to treat this terrible disorder.
Much of the death and suffering caused by cancer is associated with secondary tumours, but alot remains to be learned about how cancer spreads through the patient's body. This project will determine how genes that enable the growth of tumours work with other genes that enable cancer cells to detach from the tumour, enabling them to enter the bloodstream and form secondary tumours in other organs.

Summary
Queensland has the highest recorded rates of skin cancer in the world. Invasion into nearby nerves or �perineural invasion� occurs in approximately 5% of cases. This signifies that the tumour is aggressive and able to spread along nerves back to the brain and reduce survival. Why some tumours invade nerves remains unclear. This project will study the factors involved and the characteristics of affected patients to enable a better understanding of the disease and potentially improve treatment.
