Dryland salinity and rural community decline in Australia are important and inter-related issues. Any ecosystem recovery actions proposed to address salinity should be examined for their potential to assist rural communities, rather than exacerbate their problems. The framework theories of ecosystem health and participatory research embrace these issues. A PhD student placed in each of two recovery catchments will use methodologies adapted for these approaches to develop indicators for the detection of trends in recovery or deterioration of ecosystem and community well-being. This will allow for adaptive changes to recovery actions, and for an analysis of causal relationships.Read moreRead less

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are currently experiencing severe environmental challenges related to a changing climate. Led by Aboriginal communities, this project aims to integrate traditional knowledges and environmental and health data to create community story-data maps. These interactive, online maps will be a unique and powerful blend of information, providing a rich evidence base, decision-support and communication tool to inform the co-design of local climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience plans. The project aims to give agency to Aboriginal communities in leading a systems change process to reduce environmental risks and strengthen health and wellbeing.Read moreRead less
Assessing the effectiveness of the ageing workforce in regional organisations of Western Australia: A biopsychosocial analysis. This project will identify key organisational, management and occupational health and safety factors affecting ageing workforces in regional industries. By 2016, demographic estimates indicate a significant reduction of the young labour force while people aged 45 years and over will account for more than 80 per cent of the labour force growth (ABS, 2003). Consequently, the productivity and viability of labour-intensive industries everywhere but especially in regional Australia, will be severely affected. We will develop a novel intervention model to maximise the effectiveness of the ageing workforce. This will provide an important decision-making tool for many states, regional and local employers and bodies concerned.Read moreRead less

This project aims to determine how pain interpretation drives pain experience, using rigorous state-of-the-art lab research. This project expects to generate new knowledge about the psychological mechanisms maintaining pain experience and avoidance behaviour, using novel techniques to measure interpretation of pain sensations. Expected outcomes include the development of an evidence-based psychological model of pain interpretation, enhanced capacity to build international collaborations, and ecologically valid methods for measuring pain interpretation. This research forms a solid platform for further translational research, to build novel, scalable interventions to improve outcomes for the one in five Australians living with chronic pain.Read moreRead less

Cryptosporidium is the most common non-viral cause of diarrhoeal disease in humans worldwide, and of increasing significance as a cause of disease in livestock and wildlife. It is one of the most significant waterborne pathogens and a major challenge to the provision of safe drinking water by water utilities. Biofilms are a poorly studied component of Cryptosporidium's ecosystem, and can act as an environmental reservoir of the parasite in water storages and pipes and an unpredictable source of water contamination. This project will investigate the nature of this reservoir and factors that support the parasite's survival with a view to providing information of value in limiting the public health significance of the biofilm reservoir.Read moreRead less
Measuring and modelling the childhood determinants of human capital formation and human capability expansion. This project aims to address significant gaps in the data infrastructure needed to advance Australian's current human capital reform agenda. It will draw on existing population and longitudinal datasets and collect specific community and family data to analyse how the social, economic and ecological contexts of child development enable life-course outcomes in health and human capability. Existing human capital measures will be refined to develop data standards to support the monitoring of the reform agenda. New modelling techniques to predict patterns of economic, civic and social participation in individuals and populations will also be developed and tested.Read moreRead less
Harnessing recreational infrastructure to improve physical activity and community well-being. This project will investigate the impact that establishing a major recreational and aquatic centre has upon physical activity and measures of community well-being. It will also test the effect of different marketing strategies on community members' usage of the centre.

Leadership plays a critical role in the success of organizations and societies. The behaviours, decisions, and actions of leaders determine the overall quality of leadership. Having the most effective and efficient leader development interventions is important to strengthening the social and economic fabric of Australia. Preparing individuals to participate fully in leadership roles and processes will enhance the effectiveness of organizations of all types. In addition, there is national benefit in developing leaders who are better prepared to tackle the myriad challenges facing Australia, such as building an environmentally sustainable society, creating the frontier industry technologies, and safeguarding Australia.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide strategies and commercial products for the best management of animals in plant community restoration. Ensuring effective seed dispersal and minimizing levels of herbivory will reduce resources expended on restoration and ensure sustainable ecosystems. A small reduction in the costs of individual plant protection not only improves the success of rehabilitation programs but save millions of dollars throughout the mining industry and rural areas generally. It will also save thousands of dollars in culling programs. An extension of our study will target roadside hazards where kangaroos and traffic have high impact rates.Read moreRead less

Tree declines are prevalent throughout rural and metropolitan Australia. Apart from loss of habitat, biodiversity, shade and aesthetics, tree death is a financial burden to land managers. This project will increase our understanding of factors that drive tree declines by: (a) understanding changes in hydrological processes that occur through declining rainfall or ground water use; (b) exploring tree nutrient requirements in relation to soil fertility and land management; (c) identifying revegetation strategies for disturbed lands; and (c) through linking environmental correlates with tuart decline. It will provide the community with tools to mitigate decline such as though improved revegetation strategiesRead moreRead less
