Optimisation of base station beamforming for wireless broadband internet services in rural areas. The NBN aims to deliver 100 Mbps to Australians in major cities but much lower speeds to rural areas. A key outcome of the project is a sound foundation for the design of antenna arrays and beamformers to enable cost effective and efficient wireless internet services for rural areas and meet a challenge of national importance.

Interactive video on-demand (VoD) can be used to deliver video learning materials to students when they choose to study. The aim of this project is to investigate the research issues on designing scalable interactive VoD for e-learning. Comparing with previous work in the area, this project takes a holistic approach, which includes multicast, distributed smart caches and video coding as its building blocks. Huazhong University, who is active in e-learning research, provides an ideal location to trial interactive VoD techniques, due to their large student population. Read moreRead less

The communication protocols developed in this project will directly contribute to the realisation of wearable, mobile, and robust devices for continuous medical monitoring. Several Australian industries can benefit economically by using the technology to improve the performance, efficiency, and longevity of their existing systems for chronic disease management, aged care, personal wellness, occupational health, and in hospitals/GPs. Non-intrusive monitoring offers quality-of-life to the millions of aged and chronically ill Australians, while low-cost allows it to be widely used in regional and rural communities. Partaking in the innovation of the technology will also give Australia a strong position in the ICT space.Read moreRead less
Sensor and Actor Grid for Assistive Healthcare. Australia's population is ageing, with a significant, projected increase in the number of people aged over 65. This project addresses the core issue of providing an end-to-end assistive healthcare loop to maintain the wellness as well as improving the quality of life of this ageing population. It promises to reduce the enormous cost of public and primary healthcare. It promises to reduce the enormous cost of public and primary healthcare. Furthermore, with the proposed framework, an end user will be able to enjoy the support of multiple caregivers (relatives, community-caregivers, etc.) working collaboratively. These factors certainly relate this project to the strengthening of Australia's social and economic fabric priority.Read moreRead less

X-ray mammography has saved many lives, but the technology still produces a relativity high number of false negative and false positive diagnoses. In the last decade, active microwave techniques have attracted considerable interest as viable alternatives to X-ray mammography. This project aims at the design and development of a low-cost microwave system, which will complement all the currently available breast cancer diagnosis tools. Read moreRead less
Quantification of the Remineralisation of Enamel. This project has three specific aims:
1. To quantify the ultrastructure and mechanisms of remineralisation of enamel using scanning and transmission electron microscopy.
2. To determine the mechanical properties of remineralised tissue and compare with those of sound enamel.
3. To develop an in-vivo optical fibre probe for monitoring and quantifying the changes of mineralised carious tissue during remineralisation.
This project will enable ....Quantification of the Remineralisation of Enamel. This project has three specific aims:

2. To determine the mechanical properties of remineralised tissue and compare with those of sound enamel.
3. To develop an in-vivo optical fibre probe for monitoring and quantifying the changes of mineralised carious tissue during remineralisation.
This project will enable patients prone to orthodontic induced root resorption to be identified and also to assist with validating repair of enamel tooth structure in a non-surgical manner. It is anticipated to result in the development of a novel fibre optic instrument with applications beyond dentistry.
