Thirteen percent of all cases with Alzheimer’s Disease are potentially due to a lack of physical activity. This study investigates whether a 6-month physical activity program can significantly increase physical activity levels in older adults who are concerned about their memory and who are not physical active. New about this trial is that participants can choose their own goals they want to reach and the additional involvement of physical active volunteers who will support the participants.

Summary
Our longitudinal study examines biological, social, genetic and psychological risk and protective factors for disorders of mind and brain including depression, anxiety, substance use, cognitive impairment and dementia. Three cohorts will be assessed providing 12 years of follow-up. The study is unique within Australia for spanning 6 decades of adulthood. We will also identify what health services people use; and why many people with mental health problems do not access services.

Summary
Until recently it has been assumed that variation in blood sugar levels within the normal range in non-diabetics is innocuous. Recent findings from our team suggest that high normal sugar levels present risks to brain and cognitive health. This project will investigate in detail the extent to which higher sugar levels in healthy individuals living in the community are associated with brain changes over time, and whether these changes are associated with cognitive decline in middle- and old-age.

It has been proposed that engagement in purposeful complex mental stimulation provides protection against dementia. The Tasmanian Healthy Brain Project (THBP) is a unique, large-scale prospective trial that examines whether university-level study in older adult population reduces ageing-related cognitive decline and risk of dementia. This project will also examine how an individual’s genetic profile may influence the potential benefits of complex mental stimulation as well as risk of dementia.

Summary
In our ageing population, preventing age-related neurological decline is one of the central medical challenges of the 21st century. Here we use human population data obtained from people who reached 90 years of age free of any disease, or patients who suffer from dementia, combined with functional genomics studies in animals to pinpoint new genes that can be targeted to extend lifespan while preserving neurological function in these extended years of life.
Sleep apnoea and depression are common in the community and depression is 3 times more common in people with sleep apnoea. Since similar symptoms occur in depression and sleep apnoea, it can be hard to distinguish between them. It is not clear if sleep apnoea can cause depression. This study will investigate how best to diagnose and treat depression in people with sleep apnoea and explore how depression and sleep apnoea are linked.

We aim to conduct a trial of a new nano-laser based treatment for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) which, if successful in slowing progression of AMD, will lead to a dramatic reduction in vision loss in our community. AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in people 50 years and older in Australia. The successful outcome will postpone vision loss, benefiting many thousands of Australians, and result in substantial healthcare savings.

Although a late event for most Australians, chronic diseases present a crippling burden for Australia. This project explores their early roots, before overt disease emerges, in 3500 parents and their children in the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. We will measure how accumulated stress and buffering characteristics play out in the biology of cell ageing and inflammation, in developing heart, lung, kidney and bone health, and in quality of life and health costs to the population.

This cluster randomised controlled trial will establish the impact on physical activity and falls of an intervention program that targets both physical activity and falls using assessment, advice and health coaching. The trial will involve 60 established groups of older people, recruited from local chapters of community organisations including Probus, the Older Women’s Network, registered clubs and church groups (estimated average group size of 10; total n = 600).

Summary
Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is a major contributor to disability. Increased opioid prescribing for CNCP has produced concern about dependence and overdose in the absence on data on its long-term effectiveness. Novel statistical methods will test causal relationships over 5 years between treatment, outcomes, and costs on 1,514 CNCP patients prescribed opioids. We will answer critical questions on 5-year outcomes, and whether, and for whom, opioids and other clinical interventions reduce costs.
