Summary
Age-related cataract is the clouding of the lens, a leading cause of visual impairment among older persons. The burden of this common eye disease will only increase as the population ages. Besides age, other environmental and genetic risk factors that increase the risk of cataract have been identified. The aim of this research is to examine how the interplay of genes and environment contributes to age-related cataract formation, using population-based data of established studies.

This CRE involves collaboration between a multi-disciplinary research team across Australia working with policy-makers covering planning, urban design, transport planning and health. It will identify the most cost-effective built environment interventions required to create healthy, liveable, and equitable communities. Factors that influence research findings being translated into urban planning policy and practice will be examined and tools to assist changes to policy and practice developed.

Summary
Globally there is growing concern about the health, social, environmental, and economic impacts of rising levels of inactivity and obesity, coupled with projected population growth, climate change, declining oil supplies and rising fuel prices. Creating pedestrian-, cycling- and transit-friendly environments and encouraging alternative forms of transport is a priority. Working with policy-makers, this research aims to influence urban planning policy to create healthy, sustainable communities.
It is now well established that there are genetic factors contributing to risk of depression but it is far from clear what these are and how they interact with environmental risk factors such as stressful life events (SLE) and poor social support (SS). A recent, highly cited paper has claimed that those carrying a particular genotype at the sertonin transporter gene are much more badly affected by stressful life events than other genotypes, and that this puts these people at much higher risk of ....It is now well established that there are genetic factors contributing to risk of depression but it is far from clear what these are and how they interact with environmental risk factors such as stressful life events (SLE) and poor social support (SS). A recent, highly cited paper has claimed that those carrying a particular genotype at the sertonin transporter gene are much more badly affected by stressful life events than other genotypes, and that this puts these people at much higher risk of depression. If true, this could have important practical implications for preventative mental health, in identifying those at greatest risk if depression and counselling them to avoid stressful situations. However, success in replicating this finding has been mixed, and this is possibly because another important risk factor, social support, has not been taken into account. We have DNA samples from over 5000 twins who have been assessed for depression and risk factors including SLE and SS. This will give us unprecedented power to estimate the importance of the genotype x environment interaction. We shall also type other genes that have been implicated in depression and check for interactions with life events and social support. Asthma has recently been identified as a National health Priority (1) by the Australian Government in view of the increasing prevalence of asthma and its great importance as a public health problem. The total health system costs of asthma are estimated to be in excess of $600 million (2). Recently, feather pillows have been shown to have more than five times less house dust mite allergen than other pillows. The total health system costs of asthma are estimated to be in excess of $600 million (2). Recently, feather pillows have been shown to have more than five times less house dust mite allergen than other pillows. To date, several population-based studies have shown that children using feather upper bedding are also reported by their parents to have less severe wheeze. These findings call into question the National Asthma Council recommendation that people with asthma who are allergic to house dust mite should use synthetic quilts rather than feather or down (3). However, concerns remain that these important findings may only have occurred because unmeasured factors, such as the socioeconomic status or child diet may be closely related to feather bedding use, and in themselves, protective against asthma. Alternatively, parents of a child with asthma symptoms may be more likely to have chosen non-feather bedding. The best way to address these concerns is to conduct a randomised controlled trial to evaluate whether the use of new feather upper bedding is associated with reduced asthma severity among house dust mite-sensitised children with severe asthma. This study is underway and has support in 2001-2002 from the Financial Markets Foundation for Children.
