It involves assessing organisations against pre-defined standards. This is a highly significant issue because of the millions of dollars of investment in accreditation. We do not know if we achieve value for money or whether positive change is associated with accreditation. Few studies have examined this in detail. We aim to do so in this study. We will examine organisational and individual performance associated with accreditation status in order to illuminate the process and uncover any associations between accreditation and organisational culture, consumer participation and clinical (individual) performance indicators.

We aim to do this by identifying and distinguishing between the types of practices used by these workers to speak up on issues concerning working conditions and patient care concerns. The project will identify the determinants of speaking up in healthcare and the consequences this voice has for quality of patient care and worker wellbeing. This will have significant benefits for hospital stakeholders, including improved patient care, employee satisfaction and retention, and hospital efficiencies.Read moreRead less

Recent policy announcements by the State and Federal Governments have centred on the need to explore the use of process management principles, normally applied to manufacturing industry, to health services management. This multidisciplinary project addresses one of the most pressing needs in health services - provision of methods to reduce patient queues and waiting times in emergency departments through interactive computing simulation to visualise and plan work process improvements. This smart use of information will benefit hospital managers, patients and their carers, is transferable to other health contexts, and by optimising resource usage has the potential to help build Australian (health) business.Read moreRead less

Precarious employment and health: new knowledge, new solutions. This study examines why insecure forms of employment, such as casual work and self-employment, are usually associated with poorer health than more secure employment. The aim is to identify causes of these adverse effects and to develop policy and practice interventions to minimise them.
Assessing the effectiveness of the ageing workforce in regional organisations of Western Australia: A biopsychosocial analysis. This project will identify key organisational, management and occupational health and safety factors affecting ageing workforces in regional industries. By 2016, demographic estimates indicate a significant reduction of the young labour force while people aged 45 years and over will account for more than 80 per cent of the labour force growth (ABS, 2003). Consequently, ....Assessing the effectiveness of the ageing workforce in regional organisations of Western Australia: A biopsychosocial analysis. Consequently, the productivity and viability of labour-intensive industries everywhere but especially in regional Australia, will be severely affected. We will develop a novel intervention model to maximise the effectiveness of the ageing workforce. This will provide an important decision-making tool for many states, regional and local employers and bodies concerned.Read moreRead less

In community surveys, health is consistently regarded as the most important issue by Australian voters. Healthcare is particularly relevant in Queensland, where unprecedented population growth has increased waiting lists. Difficulties in recruiting and retaining qualified staff in Queensland's public hospitals are well-publicised. This research examines how organisational practices within hospitals contribute to these challenges in delivering quality healthcare. Improved work practices, staff retention and hospital performance will result from a better understanding of the interaction of managerial and professional logics in decision making and problem solving in the day-to-day practice of public healthcare.Read moreRead less
