This project will develop and test in the field several policies to improve Australia's blood supply. The policies will build on robust behaviours observed in economic experiments, but that have generally not been tested outside the lab. The policies include non-binding commitments, giving gifts and narrowing the perceived distance between blood donors and recipients. This project offers Australia many potential benefits including greater economic efficiency to supply blood and plasma, fewer shortages, and consequently improved health services, and greater recognition as a pioneer in blood donor supply methods.Read moreRead less
The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarettes are likely to be associated with smoking rates and failed quit attempts, yet there is little research in this area. By providing a better understanding of the effect of these factors on smoking patterns, the study will suggest the most effective avenues for reducing the rate of smoking in Australia, and thus decreasing its substantial cost to individuals and the community.Read moreRead less

Apart from providing new information on blood donor behaviour, the project will also contribute to more general knowledge about volunteers in the community and their role in the maintenance and development of health services.Read moreRead less
Improved communication with heart patients in the context of the gift economy. Coronary Heart Disease is Australia's biggest killer and a patient's diagnosis is a traumatic event. A majority of patients resists the implications of their disease and fails to follow medical recommendations fully. Humanities research enables increased understanding of, and better communication with, heart patients yet has not been extensively used to understand how patients make sense of their new status. HeartNET, a therapeutic website, is used to investigate construction of the self as a heart patient and the research also applies gift economy theory to online interactions which help both self and others. Benefits include patient support and improved health outcomes, reducing human and financial costs to the community and Australia.Read moreRead less

The Heart Foundation (WA) provides quality support services and communications for patients in rural, remote and regional WA but they find that distance creates problems. They also seek to cultivate active donor engagement.
Audience research and cultural studies tools are used to investigate two different communications environments in terms of whether these have an effect on patient/donor participation rates (and attitudes and behaviours linked to participation). A web site will be developed to support online Heart Foundation communities and these audiences will be compared with current communication practice. Findings will inform future charitable and health promotion initiatives.

National benefits include new knowledge about online communities that deliver specialist health advice. Specific research benefits comprise improved education and support for earlier detection of, and enhanced recovery rates for, breast cancer. The project investigates whether we can harness the cluster-power of social networks to build integrated and supportive online communities. Relevant to Australian organisations using digital communications for education and support, the study seeks to reduce disadvantage due to distance. Organisations concerned about minimising risk arising from uninformed opinion and discussion will learn whether they can integrate specialist expertise and comment without destroying online dynamics.Read moreRead less
Sexual health and relationships in young Indigenous people. Despite higher notified rates of sexually transmissible infections and blood borne viruses and often negative depictions of young indigenous people, very little is known of the health and well being of young Indigenous people. This project will for the first time provide a national profile of risk behaviours, levels of knowledge and the types of health services young Indigenous people access for sexual health and blood borne viruses. The findings of this research will set the foundations for a longer term strategy to ensure trends and behaviours can be identified among the population and where necessary interventions can be implemented. Law is a potent tool that could influence the economic, environmental and social structures, as well as the personal choices, that generate poor health outcomes. Very little work has been carried out on law's relationship with non-communicable diseases, either in Australia or internationally. By exploring and promoting the contribution that public health law can make to health policy on non-communicable diseases, this project will contribute to the promotion and maintenance of good health in Australia.Read moreRead less
Effects of Private Health Insurance on Health Care Usage and Health Outcomes in Australia. Australians spend more than $7 billion each year on private health insurance (PHI), of which government subsidies amount to more than $2 billion. There is, however, little understanding of how PHI affects health care usage and health outcomes. Having PHI is likely to result in better health for the insured, but more health resources are also likely to be used. Moreover, the health of the uninsured could be adversely affected if health resources available to the public hospital sector are reduced. This research will inform health policymaking on the effects of subsidising PHI on health care usage and health outcomes.Read moreRead less
