Pro bono service: drivers, delight, dark side and downside for the professional. Pro bono work, common in the professions, is important to Australia's economy. This ground breaking research provides rich insights into why pro bono givers feel unappreciated, unacknowledged, unreciprocated, and often taken advantage of and, importantly, equips professionals with strategies for enhanced outcomes.
Social networks, identity and recovery. Relapse rates for alcohol and drug dependence are high, with limited understanding of what factors promote abstinence and wellbeing over the longer term. To address this gap, the proposed project will systematically examine the role of social networks and group memberships on recovery from drug dependence. Relapse rates for alcohol and drug dependence are high, with limited understanding of what factors promote abstinence and wellbeing over the longer term. To address this gap, the proposed project will systematically examine the role of social networks and group memberships on recovery from drug dependence. In a world’s first, this project will examine whether individuals who successfully recover undergo a social identity transformation, and if so, how this occurs. Novel insights from this project will inform our understanding of how individuals recover from addiction, with opportunities for informing current treatment approaches and developing innovative interventions. Investigations of the Integrity of the Australian Height Datum. The Australian Height Datum (AHD) forms the fundamental framework for all vertical spatial information in Australia. It supports a wide range of applications in areas such as geodesy, surveying, mapping, telecommunications, resource exploration and environmental science. This medium-term research programme will investigate the many issues surrounding the integrity of the AHD, and will rigorously redefine, correct and unify it with ....Investigations of the Integrity of the Australian Height Datum. The Australian Height Datum (AHD) forms the fundamental framework for all vertical spatial information in Australia. It supports a wide range of applications in areas such as geodesy, surveying, mapping, telecommunications, resource exploration and environmental science. This medium-term research programme will investigate the many issues surrounding the integrity of the AHD, and will rigorously redefine, correct and unify it within a global vertical framework. This will provide improved height information to the numerous users of the AHD in Australia, and allow Australia to contribute more fully to the global spatial data infrastructure.Read moreRead less
Photoelectrocatalysis-based Techniques for Bactericidal Applications. Effective control of the quality of water supply is paramount for public health. Effective control of the quality of water supply is paramount for public health. This project aims to develop a novel photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) based bactericidal technology capable of instant inactivation and rapid decomposition of waterborne pathogens in recycled water. The PEC processes at the illuminated semiconductor photoanodes with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light activities will be innovatively utilised with the aim of in-situ generation of stable di-halide radical anions, reactive oxygen species and photoholes as effectual bactericides to achieve instant inactivation and rapid decomposition of waterborne pathogens. The success of the project is expected to provide Australian water industry with enabling technology to safeguard recycled water usage.Read moreRead less
Problems of identification and inference for 'non-standard' models in complex systems with special reference to finance and teletraffic. The project is concerned with 'non-standard' models needed to deal with complex systems, such as those exhibiting scaling and fractal properties. There is a focus on methods for dealing with heavy tailed distributions and long range dependent observations, for which most standard statistical methods break down, and on applications in finance and telecommunications. An important part of the project concerns model validation for Heyde's fractal activity time geometric Brownian motion model, a candidate minimal description risky asset model to replace the geometric Brownian motion paradigm.Read moreRead less
Understanding Online Education Through the Lens of Service Separation. This project examines consumer perceptions of and their differential responses to traditional versus online education through the lens of service separation. Service separation implies that the production and consumption of the service do not take place simultaneously. This project examines consumer perceptions of and their differential responses to traditional versus online education through the lens of service separation. Service separation implies that the production and consumption of the service do not take place simultaneously. Thus, online course offerings, which are posted on the Internet and accessed remotely by students, represent a separated service. In contrast, traditional education represents an unseparated service, as the teaching and learning occur simultaneously in the classroom. This project will explain student preference for one mode of education delivery over the other in terms of their psychological motivation. The outcomes of this research are expected to influence the provision of higher education.Read moreRead less
Unintentional surfactant facilitated solubilisation and transport of apparently immobile chemicals. This research will improve qualitative and quantitative understanding on surfactant facilitated transport processes of apparently immobile contaminants. The project's goal is to provide a modelling approach that ultimately can be applied to assess and predict groundwater and offsite contamination risks in areas where surfactants are commonly used.
Investigating the impact of augmented reality on consumer decision making and marketing systems. The marketing environment is changing rapidly, with mobile digital devices providing consumers the ability to augment their physical reality with virtual representations. This project investigates how consumers make choices, how manufacturers design successful business practices and how regulators proscribe manipulative behaviour in these environments.
Digital Death and Immortality. This project will create a philosophically-informed ethical approach for managing the 'digital remains' of internet users who have died. Emerging artificial intelligence technologies make it possible to reuse and interact with these digital remains. This offers new ways of commemorating the dead and for managing grief. Yet these technologies also threaten to exploit the dead and to change our relationship to them in troubling ways. Expected outcomes of the project ....Digital Death and Immortality. Expected outcomes of the project include guidance for the ethical use of these technologies and policy recommendations for regulating the reuse of digital remains. This will provide significant benefits by helping Australia to avoid the ethical dangers inherent in emerging technologies of 'digital reanimation.'Read moreRead less
Work Experience: Labour Law at the Intersection of Work and Education. This project aims to examine the regulatory challenges relating to post-secondary work experience, such as internships, in the areas of labour and employment, anti-discrimination and workers compensation law in Australia. The analysis is designed to establish a global and comparative context, examining policy and regulatory responses in Canada, Europe (including Britain), New Zealand, and the United States of America and at the international level. By offering a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical and practical implications of law's boundary between work and education, it is expected to identify optimum approaches to the regulation of post-secondary work experience, and thereby expand policy debates and enhance future law reform.Read moreRead less
