Separation anxiety in pregnancy: associations with oxytocin release, attachment styles and mother-infant interactions. This world's first longitudinal study will investigate the role of the hormone oxytocin in maternal anxiety and mother-infant interactions. This project aims to better understand and address the transmission of anxiety and bonding difficulties across generations.
Influences on farmer suicide in Queensland and New South Wales. Australian farmers have been identified as being at high-risk of suicide. This project will provide direction for targeted suicide prevention strategies by quantifying the individual and environmental factors that place farmers at higher risk of suicide, as well as the protective factors that may buffer against suicide and suicidal behaviours.

In an effort to maintain and improve the health of the population Australia has defined the core public health functions that must be carried out. This project will examine public health infrastructure and capacity in three states - mapping the implementation of core functions, assessing current infrastructure, comparing organisational approaches, and developing measures of local public health capacity. These will then become industry benchmarks to guide investment and interventions, and to assess the quality of these. The project will investigate the context in which core public health functions are successfully delivered and develop tools to measure local capacity and delivery functions.Read moreRead less
Improving cancer treatment systems: a randomised controlled trial of a consumer action model for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The project aims to assess the effectiveness of a model for improving cancer treatment systems, which emphasises meaningful engagement of cancer consumers in identifying, implementing and evaluating strategies of change. System changes are expected to reduce patients' unmet supportive care needs and improve overall quality of life.

Considering the scarcity of effective interventions for the kinds of distress and suffering that so commonly occur amongst MND dying patients, this novel therapeutic intervention could become a very easy, practical intervention adopted within palliative care facilities and MND organisations. Unlike most palliative care interventions, this approach, leading to the production of a generativity document, has the important added potential benefit of being a powerful bereavement intervention for carers. The potential benefits of this intervention could lead to a reduction in in-patient admissions and a reduced need for respite for both the person with MND and the family carer.Read moreRead less
Understanding women's experiences of unplanned pregnancy and abortion. The economic, health and social costs to the Australian community of unplanned pregnancies and abortions constitute a public health concern of undoubted significance. Debates in both policy and public arenas are hampered by a lack of comprehensive reliable evidence about incidence of abortion and the factors underlying decisions to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Further, there is considerable variation among Australian stat ....Understanding women's experiences of unplanned pregnancy and abortion. Further, there is considerable variation among Australian states regarding abortion-related legislation. The data generated from this project will establish an evidence base, inform potential legislative change and monitor any effects, and improve delivery of appropriate health services and strategies to prevent unplanned pregnancies and their adverse consequences.

This approach could potentially address chronic disease at a national and international level by promoting healthy communities that can effectively manage chronic disease through collaborative learning and knowledge-building. The project represents an important collaboration between a university and its community with a view to improving health capacity.Read moreRead less
New directions in health inequalities research: understanding the intersection between housing, employment and health in Australia. People employed on a casual basis in Australia are nearly three times more likely to live in a household that is in housing affordability stress than their permanently employed counterparts. Employment and housing are both determinants of health. While social inclusion, employment and housing affordability are critical components of the government's current social policy agenda, articulation between these policy domains is limited and little researched. This important study will provide robust evidence on the ways that housing and employment interact to both cause and prevent health inequities. This will directly benefit agencies delivering services to vulnerable people and contribute to an evidence base of benefit to policy makers.Read moreRead less
Changing Places: An exploration of factors influencing the move of older people from retirement villages to residential aged care. Older Australians living in retirement villages, an increasing community population segment, make choices both about the place at which they live, and the support needed to optimise health and wellbeing at that place. This study explores how and why this ....Changing Places: An exploration of factors influencing the move of older people from retirement villages to residential aged care. Older Australians living in retirement villages, an increasing community population segment, make choices both about the place at which they live, and the support needed to optimise health and wellbeing at that place. Changing places for this group often involves moving from retirement village to residential aged care facility. This study explores how and why this change occurs, how it might be avoided, and, when the move is unavoidable what can improve the moving process. Findings will inform innovations in policy, service and health care provision designed to facilitate appropriate ageing in place congruent with best practice principles.Read moreRead less

This research is in the National Research Priority, promoting and maintaining good health. Mental health problems cost Australia millions of dollars every year as well as creating immeasurable social adversity for individuals and families. The proposed research represents a significant step towards reducing these costs and improving the effectiveness of early intervention and prevention. The research will lead to improvements in methods for early detection of child psychopathology with potential for implementation in both community health and educational services nation-wide. The research partnership will build Australia's capacity for innovative research in the development, early intervention and treatment of mental health problems.Read moreRead less
