Summary
An estimated 5,000 lives are lost each year in NSW through early deaths due to differences in socioeconomic status. While many of the causes are related to social, environmental and economic factors the health system has an important direct role through advocacy, improving access to services and reducing risks for illness. This study looks at the effectiveness of using equity focused health impact assessment to ensure health policies maximise the distribution of benefits to all groups.

Summary
There is abundant evidence that many patients do not receive medical treatments of proven effectiveness. This is even more apparent in developing countries. Strategies to improve use of proven treatments is needed. Our research aims to evaluate an educational program for doctors in Lao PDR, based on World Health Organisation guidelines for the care of sick children in hospitals, including the impact on the knowledge of doctors and on the quality of care in the hospitals in which they work.

The inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The number of people in Australia with these conditions is unknown and the impact of illness is also poorly defined. This research aims to establish the number of people developing these conditions in a region of Australia. In addition the impact in terms of personal and health economic costs, quality of life and psychological effect will be determined.

The aim of this project is determine how best to measure, analyse and compare the effects of different operations for women with breast cancer. This will be done with information on measurements of arm swelling, symptoms, functions, and other aspects of quality of life collected in over 1,000 women taking part in a national randomised trial. This research will provide important information about the effects of these operations, and about how best to design future surgical trials.

Health conditions like pain and depression are difficult to measure, yet we can hear in someone’s voice if they are upset or distressed. This study is looking to develop ways the voice can be used to track changes in a patient’s condition. By recording a speech sample and analyzing parts of the signal, we may be able to tell if a drug treatment for depression is working, or if a patient is experiencing less pain after therapy.

This research will contribute to existing models and identify critical factors associated with effective low vision models of care and delivery of services globally. Factors such as coverage, access, equity, and barriers to care delivery will be examined. Relevant stakeholders such as the World Health Organization Low Vision Working Group and Non-Government Organizations will be able to use this data to set priorities for its work plan, training, program development and low vision advocacy.
