This project addresses an issue of international concern for higher education. Previous studies of associations between research and teaching have focused either on direct relations between outcomes, or on faculty and administrator opinions. We mean to explain the connection using a framework from our research into academics' understanding of their subject matter and approaches to teaching. We expect the outcomes to demonstrate that the key to the research-teaching connection lies in how active researchers and teachers experience the two activities, and that the association is mediated by the way in which they understand their subject matter.Read moreRead less

In 2007, 90,000 students from China were studying in Australia. This represents 23% of Australia's international students. This project will improve Australia's capacity for engaging China by producing an innovative framework for teaching mainland Chinese research students. It will explore the educational value of engaging these students' Chinese intellectual heritage; their communicative abilities in English and Chinese, and the knowledge they access via digital technologies. Australia's knowledge about the internationalisation of its research education and developmental, cooperative approaches to research will be increased. This will enhance Australia's capacity for research-based engagement with the educational culture of China. Read moreRead less

Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development - Grant ID: DI0668361
Funder
Australian Research Council
Funding Amount
$20,000.00
Summary
Reading as a cultural and historical practice. A better understanding and use of reading as an academic tool for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and educators will be a result of the research. It will provide a new understanding of how reading skills can be used by Indigenous students to comprehend academic information and how academics can approach reading without excluding Indigenous knowledges.

Australia seeks to be a world leader in research activity including research education and training. This is evident in the establishment of National Research Priorities, the Research Quality Framework and $577m currently invested annually in research training. Thesis quality is a critical indicator of success, but universities globally have been grappling with ways to discriminate fairly and effectively between different levels and types of research theses. This study rises to the challenge and will lead in building, refining and testing a framework for reporting thesis quality that will enhance our own system of research training and model best practice internationally.Read moreRead less

Doctoral research is a significant component of research activity in Australian higher education and effective research student supervision and high quality research are key goals. The main control over quality is the thesis examination, but there is no systematic study of examiner consistency or application of standards within and across disciplines. Drawing on candidature history, examiner reports and ratings, this cross-institutional study responds to the need for foundational research into the area. The study will ascertain assessment processes, assessment criteria and factors that identify highly rated theses. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of doctoral education practices.Read moreRead less
Enhancing the quality of academic supervision provided to Indigenous Australian doctoral students. This project will undertake a detailed investigation into the supervision provided to Indigenous Australians who now hold a doctoral qualification in order to identify successful supervision strategies. A best-practice model for the supervision of Indigenous doctoral students will be constructed as a resource for all academics.
Keeping Pace: A Critical Longitudinal Analysis of the Psychosocial Determinants of Seeding Success in Educating Home-Grown Doctors for Regional Communities. Australia currently has a medical workforce situation which, if unchecked, will see a deepening of the shortage of doctors in rural & regional communities. Elucidating the impact of psychosocial drivers on medical education outcomes will identify potent practical strategies that seed success. The outcomes of this research have the potential to 'break the cycle' of doctor shortages in underserved areas by generating new solutions to: improve Australia's capacity to strengthen home-grown medical education; address doctor shortages regionally; and build capacity at community and individual levels. This research has important implications for the future of home-grown medical education nationally and internationally. Read moreRead less

As society moves into a new era, knowledge creation has become vital to Australia's participation in global society. Knowledge creation fuels innovation and economic prosperity, and fosters social cohesion through new forms of community engagement. Young adults play an important role in our society as the next generation of knowledge workers, with many already active knowledge creators in their everyday and academic lives. By investigating how young adults create knowledge across these diverse contexts, this research will provide important practical insights for educators and policy-makers who are trying to determine the role of higher education in a knowledge society.Read moreRead less
