A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a pict ....A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a picture of their emotional and familial world. Its novel methodology will supply a model for doing similar work in other contexts, while its insights into how this group formed families, and used emotions in that process, will provide historical data that can inform social policy and strengthen Australia's social and economic fabric.Read moreRead less
Everyday Obligations: Households and Economic Change in the British Isles 1650-1850. The project will develop scholarship about the history of family and households in the British Isles during industrialisation and associated changes. The resulting published work will advance our knowledge of the social implications of demographic change; the relationship between people and environment; the impact of industrialisation on demography as well as the micro-economies of past households and families. ....Everyday Obligations: Households and Economic Change in the British Isles 1650-1850. How did the liberty to write and read relate to ideas about personal autonomy? What effects do words have on those who read or hear them? Summary
Protecting the peace: protectors and the legal transformation of the British Empire, 1820-1850. This project will examine the impact of two new imperial offices, the Protector of Slaves and Protector of Aborigines on the legal constitution of the British Empire at a moment of rapid transformation. It will show these offices operated both as new weapons both of legal imperialism and of intimate colonial governance.
Personal liberty, British identity and surveillance in the antipodes, 1780s - 1830s. By studying surveillance in colonial Australia and South Africa, this project will come to a new understanding of what defined British liberty. It will demonstrate that our country's history lies at the centre of one of the most pressing questions of our time-how far do concepts of freedom remain tied to national and cultural particularity?

This project investigates how refugee movements in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War One contributed to the empire's collapse in 1918. It explores the impact of war, forced migrations, nationalism and the international community on the breakdown of modern state and civil society structures in Central and Eastern Europe.
Historicising orientalism: the French, the Jews, and the modern world. This project will rethink the history of the relationship between East and West. It will look at the role played by interactions between Europeans and Jews in the Orient. It will break down the overly simplistic and politically-driven dialectic that governs understandings of Orientalism, offering important new insights into this phenomenon.
