The Companion to Tasmanian History will be a comprehensive, accessible encyclopedia, covering all topics of Tasmanian history. It will include twenty longer thematic essays and 730 factual entries, many containing new material about topics on which little research has been done.
No work like this has ever been produced, and it will provide Tasmanians with information about every aspect of their past, as much-praised Companions to South Australian and Australian History have done. Published in printed and CR-Rom format, its audiences will include the general public, students and academic researchers, ensuring the widest possible dissemination of the project's pioneering findings.

To re-vitalize the research base of early Australian history by resuming the research, editing and publication of Historical Records of Australia, Series III and also to initiate, in similar form, the research, editing and publication of Historical Records of Australia Series I (Despatches and Documents relating to New South Wales), with the aim of completing Historical Records of Australia in approximately 60 volumes. The expected outcome will be to establish a ....Historical Records of Australia. To re-vitalize the research base of early Australian history by resuming the research, editing and publication of Historical Records of Australia, Series III and also to initiate, in similar form, the research, editing and publication of Historical Records of Australia Series I (Despatches and Documents relating to New South Wales), with the aim of completing Historical Records of Australia in approximately 60 volumes. The Courtroom, Lawyers and the Press: Negotiating Justice in the Age of the Public Sphere. The origins of modern Australian systems of justice are derived from institutions and cultures developed in Britain, and this project will contribute a deeper understanding of their nature and provenance. It will illuminate the roots of the modern trial as an instrument of governance that involves largely symbolic, rather than substantive, popular participation, and trace its equally significant role as a ....The Courtroom, Lawyers and the Press: Negotiating Justice in the Age of the Public Sphere. This project aims to trace how ordinary people’s thinking about food safety has changed over time; from this, we can investigate food safety techniques and practices by government and industry. In studying Singapore, which has always imported nearly all food, the project expects to generate new lessons from Singapore's history that may widely apply in an era of globalisation and contemporary food system complexity. The view that Australia was always a racially based society, pursuing racial policies to the detriment of indigenous Australians and our Asian neighbours, is subject to rancorous national debate. By investigating experiences of becoming a mother in Australia since 1945, this project intends to provide an historical perspective on mothering in the present. Over the past 70 years, Australian motherhood has undergone vast changes: the average age of becoming a mother has increased, sources of maternal advice have proliferated and maternity has become seen as optional rather than compulsory. The project aims to analyse how these shifts have affected the experience of adopting a maternal identity for several generations of Australian women.
