Summary
Experiments in space: geospatial information technologies for cultural environmental research. By harnessing the power of emerging digital mapping technologies, this research will extend how we understand the relationship between humans and the environment. Specifically it will use maps to generate new knowledge across two important yet everyday problems: bushfire management and urban quality of life.
Sydney's Chinatown in the Asian century: from ethnic enclave to global hub. The project examines the role of Sydney’s Chinatown as a bridge in supporting economic and cultural links between Australia and Asia, and the activities undertaken by the City of Sydney to enhance those links in the era of rapid globalisation and rising Chinese power.
Cultural sustainability in Australian country towns: amenity, mobility, and everyday life. By exploring the everyday experiences of culture and cultural amenity in three country towns, this cross-disciplinary project provides the first comprehensive documentation of the complexity of cultural sustainability within rural Australia. Consumer Culture: the influence of economics on modern theories and practices of sexual psychology. The project has implications for a wide range of public debates in Australia today, including debates about the ethics and psychology of the pornography industry and the pervasive use of the ‘sex sells’ principle in marketing and entertainment. It will produce new knowledge and understanding of how psychological theory has been used to rationalise the commercialisation of sex in consumer culture a ....Consumer Culture: the influence of economics on modern theories and practices of sexual psychology. The project examines the crossover between ‘alternative’ and ‘mainstream’ cultural production in Australia, identifying ways in which a hybridisation between the avant garde and the popular promotes the development of cultural industries. This project innovatively combines an analysis of past and contemporary configurations of gender and sexuality across the Pacific, using historical and ethnographic methods to address interconnected questions about women, men and transgendered persons. It situates dynamic transformations of gender and sexuality in cross-cultural encounters wherein indigenous and exogenous patterns creatively combined. It focuses successively on four epochs and processes: the Cook voyages in the late eighteenth century; Christian conversion from the nineteenth century and the changing fabric of femininities; parallel transformations of masculinities with Christian conversion and male migrant labour and contemporary reconfigurations of gender liminality in relation to homosexuality.Read moreRead less

This project interrogates how the notion of mind has come to shape western attitudes about what it means to be human. Focusing on the notorious head-measuring practices of colonial times, it provokes a rethinking of our cherished claim of being privileged among other life-forms.
Voyages of Myth: Captain Cook in the Popular Australian Imagination. The approaches and writings that will be produced from this project can be taken up by national institutions such as museums and libraries and used as a vehicle to promote a different kind of national debate beyond fact or fiction or even right and wrong. Our outcomes should influence the collection design of national archives and suggest original and incisive frameworks for staging national displays of identity and the past.
