The project will help develop the standards of excellence of Australian ATCs, contribute to internationalizing Australian human factors literature, develop the knowledge and skills of the Airservices staff and research team, and assist RAF and civil ATC collaboration.Read moreRead less
Enhancing computer user productivity of integrated enterprise wide systems: an intervention study. This project addresses a critical issue in IT investment and productivity. Current theoretical models of user training and acceptance have not contributed to the effectiveness of implementing new integrated enterprise wide systems. This study will identify key indiviudal differences that predict user motivation to learn and utilize such systems under mandatory conditions. A longitudinal study in ....Enhancing computer user productivity of integrated enterprise wide systems: an intervention study. A longitudinal study in two field settings will test the impact of selected interventions on task performance following training. The outcomes will inform Australian industry on models of effective implementation and provide guidance to increase the productivity of personnel using software systems.Read moreRead less
The Adoption of Information Technologies by Rural General Practitioners: A Socio-Technical Analysis. Many information technology (IT) products have been developed to support general practitioners (GPs) in aspects of their work (GPSRG, 1998). It is apparent that GPs are not making best use of these systems. The question is: if IT applications have been developed, why are GPs reluctant to use them? This study contrasts two approaches to innovation in researching the adoption of IT by rural gener ....The Adoption of Information Technologies by Rural General Practitioners: A Socio-Technical Analysis. It aims to identify and model socio-technical factors that enable and inhibit the uptake of IT.

Facilitating intuitive interaction with complex devices for older users. Poorly designed interfaces impact more strongly on older people. Helping designers to make more intuitive interfaces for older community members has great potential for improving their lives and health, and thus benefiting the community generally. Helping designers to make more intuitive interfaces for older community members has great potential for improving their lives and health, and thus benefiting the community generally. Making modern devices easier for older people to use will allow them to participate more fully in society and/or the workplace. This will also help to prevent them from becoming isolated and possibly depressed. This project will apply intuitive interaction to healthcare devices that older people use, which can save costly mistakes and even lives.Read moreRead less
Information support tools for the trauma patient pathway. Processes such as critical supply chain management, disaster management, and trauma patient pathways need people, resources, and information to be smoothly transferred between jurisdictions, but problems can occur at each handover. This project focuses on the prehospital to hospital patient pathway and aims to develop technologies, devices, and displays to support more effective handover of patients between jurisdictions. The project will ....Information support tools for the trauma patient pathway. The project will conduct field research, design activities, and simulation-based evaluation of prototypes with healthcare professionals. Expected outcomes are designs, technologies, and guidelines that will generalise to other multi-jurisdictional processes. Benefits are safer and more efficient handover processes.Read moreRead less
Gesture-controlled interaction to enrich information access. This project is a study of gestural computing (enabled by sensors such as pressure mats, infra-red sensors and video tracking) which aims to move away from desk-bound, restrictive computing environments and towards computing that is more integral to the building structure and space itself. Linking gesture controllers and information sonification delivers a unique bridge between data and human interaction. Enriching the capacity to access information in dense workplace environments is central to improved efficiency across the Australian workforce. Greater accuracy and enhanced techniques for controlling information in visually-overloaded work environments contribute to Australia's competitive leadership in a global marketplace.Read moreRead less
Systems to Support Knowledge Creation in Learning Organisations. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems. An interpretive study will determine how the systems can contribute to organisational learning, performance, and responsiveness to change. The outcomes will inform the designers of such systems and show Australian organisations how to gain competitive advantage by expanding their capacity to learn.Read moreRead less

Australia must develop and implement new models of health service provision to increase capacity and reduce errors within workforce and resource constraints. Working with one of the largest area health services in NSW this project will address this challenge. The results will directly benefit the community by creating and testing new models for how health professionals can use information technologies to improve the safety, quality and efficiency of health care services. The findings will underpin national efforts to improve the productivity and effectiveness of the health workforce and its ability to respond to changing demands. The effective use of IT is a critical enabling factor for national productivity and growth. Read moreRead less
An Investigation of Reasons Why Customers Adopt or Reject Technologically Facilitated Services. The study aims to widen the scope of ground-breaking work already undertaken, and published, by the Chief Investigators: to test and empirically substantiate hypotheses and conclusions deriving from that work; and to provide grounds by which service organisations may better understand and cater for the different needs and requirements of markets served by technologically facilitated services.
Evaluating the impact of information and communication technologies on organisational processes and outcomes: a multi-disciplinary, multi-method approach. Investment in new information and communication technologies (ICT) is a high-risk business. Investment in new information and communication technologies (ICT) is a high-risk business. There is poor understanding of why so many ICTs fail in complex organisations This project will develop and test a Multi-method Evaluation Model (MEM) to measure the impact of ICT on organisational processes and outcomes in such organisations. The model addresses the practical complexity and political fragmentation of human practice in determining ICT use and outcomes, by considering organisational and socio-cultural factors. Key factors that predict acceptance, effective use and improvement in processes and outcomes will be identified. The generic predictive model will highlight factors which improve organisational processes and outcomes.Read moreRead less
