Summary
We all began life with a set of genes inherited from our parents. However, it's now known that from the time we were in the womb onwards that genes can be turned off and on by the environment or even completely lost or gained. Even what your mother ate or how she behaved while she was pregnant could have influenced your future health. Because people are so different, we are studying the subtle differences between twins to tease out the factors that may influence our genes and our health.

Melanesia's violent environments: Extractive resource industries, agrarian change and conflict in the Western Pacific. Large-scale mining activities were deeply implicated in the armed conflicts on the islands of Bougainville (1989-98) and Guadalcanal (1998-2003). Island Melanesia is now on the brink of a major new mining boom, compelling an urgent reconsideration of the relationships between mining, violence and political fragmentation in this island region. Women's political participation, representation and well-being: learning from China's villages. Through a comparative study of Chinese villages, this project tests a framework for analysing the interplay between women's political representation and women's well-being. The project outcomes include new conceptual and methodological tools, strategies for enhancing gender equity in governance and development, and scholarly publications.
'Trading' Women's Rights in Transitions: Designing Diplomatic Interventions in Afghanistan and Myanmar. This project aims to examine the link between diplomatic negotiations and their impact on the shifting status of women during times of deep political change. It will assess three key areas of international diplomatic negotiations around peace agreements, aid, and security sector reform and assess how these negotiations affected women's status on the ground. Going for gold: safe livelihoods for informal gold miners in South and Southeast Asia. Informal gold mining by the rural poor is transforming contemporary rural Asian economies. This project will focus on the community level, and on mineral-rich tracts in South and Southeast Asia, to explore how the livelihoods of the rural poor are changing in response to high gold prices.

Summary
Intimate relationships and the politics of personhood in the Philippines. Through the lens of young women's intimate relationships on Siquijor Island, Philippines, this project seeks to understand better changing norms of sociality in a globalising world. This project focuses on transgressive relationships which, as instances of rule-breaking, highlight implicit social expectations of inter-personal connection and obligation.
Gendered Excellence in the Social Sciences. Gender equity has still not been realised, despite decades of activism, policy and research. In some of the social sciences, women make up less than 15 per cent of the professoriate. Yet these are the disciplines that should most aid our understanding of how gender works in society.
