It is increasingly recognised that the major barriers to the urgent challenges of environmental sustainability are social, cultural and organisational rather than scientific. This project will help Australia imagine and implement environmental strategies that come to terms with the reality of a peopled landscape and thus better manage landscapes and species. It will place Australia at the forefront of international intellectual debates about relationships between the human and non-human worlds, and contribute to our continued international leadership in biodiversity conservation and heritage management. It will foster linkages with Sweden and build a node of innovative interdisciplinary postgraduate research training.Read moreRead less

Although human influences now pervade all Earth processes, environmental ideals of pristine past landscapes without people continue to dominate. The project addresses the challenge of managing environments for hybridity, change and human presence, rather than timeless purity. I will undertake the first in-depth ethnographic study of the suburban backyard, Australia's most hybrid ecosystem. I analyse how categories of environmental belonging - indigenous/introduced, wild/tame, hybrid/pure - are differentially applied to people, other species and landscapes, in policy and popular culture. This contributes to new theories of long term human-environment interactions and effective management of human landscapes. Outcomes will include books and museum exhibitions.Read moreRead less
Historical Patterns of Non-Union Employee Representation in Australian Workplaces 1914-96. The project uses historical data to provide clear direction for public policy in the development of frontier technology for employment relations infrastructure at the workplace level. This infrastructure would support micro-economic reform, maximisation of workplace efficiency, the enhancement of employee job satisfaction, as well as offering means to close the representation gap that has emerged with the decline in trade union membership. By using historical data policy development will be informed by Australian experience of success and failures in this area.Read moreRead less

Exchange networks, developed from a complex series of interactions between Aboriginal groups, have permitted the movement of goods, ceremonies and stories across the Australian landscape. Examination of the evolution and development of exchange will be undertaken through the study of sandstone quarries and the grinding stones that were derived from these places. The interdisciplinary approach involves geological characterisation of the sandstones and the grinding stones coupled with an archaeological investigation of production and use. The results of this study will provide a picture of the antiquity of exchange networks in an economic and social context.Read moreRead less
A history of Aboriginal Sydney since 1788. This project will illustrate the complex nature and history of Sydney's Indigenous population. Striking benefits will flow from tracing the historical relationships between the non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly in mutual understanding. Striking benefits will flow from tracing the historical relationships between the non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly in mutual understanding. Reconciliation cannot take place without a full understanding of how the first inhabitants and the newcomers have interacted for more than 200 years. Mutual comprehension will help to build healthy, productive and fulfilling Aboriginal lives. A comprehending and cohesive Australia will be all the stronger to tackle complex social issues within and outside our national borders.

The Concept of Innocence and the Political Community: Australian identity and social health. In recent years, dispute, and even violence, has erupted in Australia between cultural groups and interests. By analysing the import of 'innocence' in Western social thought, and the cultural values corresponding to it, the project promotes a rethinking of the assumptions that underpin (and often undermine) relations between different cultures that make up the Australian community. In so doing, the project addresses urgent questions posed by contemporary philosophy, and implicitly within Australian society, regarding the negotiation of differences between citizens and communities. The project thereby contributes to Australia's reputation in the field of social philosophy, particularly concerning cultural difference.Read moreRead less

This project will create and define generic tools and services to increase the productivity of those involved with the creation, maintenance and use of source material for humanities research. It will provide a pathway to move this infrastructure onto a more sustainable footing and address issues of information overload, authority and quality facing researchers in the networked digital age. This imperative is seen by scholars and representatives of the nation's major collecting institutions as a primary limiting factor in the contemporary research environment. The project will enhance Australia's reputation as a world leader in the development of web-based information infrastructure to support research and scholarship.Read moreRead less

Reparation schemes for the victims of gross violation of human rights have developed significantly over the last 25 years in various jurisdictions across the world. In Australia there has been a call for reparations for Aboriginal victims of forcible removal from their families (the Stolen Generations). The research aims to (a) analyse the international experience of reparations along specific criteria; (b) determine the effectiveness of various approaches and the applicability of various models to the Australian context; (c) determine other practices, policies or events in relation to Australian Indigenous people which might give rise to reparations.Read moreRead less
The Construction of Race and Racial Identity at the Antipodes of Empire, 1788-1840. The view that Australia was always a racially based society, pursuing racial policies to the detriment of indigenous Australians and our Asian neighbours, is subject to rancorous national debate. The view that Australia was always a racially based society, pursuing racial policies to the detriment of indigenous Australians and our Asian neighbours, is subject to rancorous national debate. Polemical assertion by high profile journalists that race was never a driving force in Australian history is not conducive to understanding complex history, nor are derogatory attacks on historians helpful in explaining the past to our neighbours. Whether colonial Australia was a race-based society remains to be established. With indigenous uncertainty over the demise of ATSIC and rising antagonism among our Islamic neighbours, there is need, as never before, for dispassionate scholarship to provide a complex interpretation of Australia's past.Read moreRead less
Whiteness: A Genealogical Study. We know so little about the white fathers of indigenous children and yet they remain a crucial part of stolen generations history. Bringing to the fore material about white fathers may further research on the possibilities of reconciling different historical accounts of Australian social life. As such, this research promises both intellectual innovation and practical societal benefits.
