Fundamentals and applications of continuous-flow microprocessing systems based on supercritical fluids and gas expanded liquids. Microchemical systems have considerable potential in the area of chemical discovery and development. Practical application of these systems requires fundamental understanding and strategies for conversion to appropriate scale. The aim of this project is to overcome such challenges in the development of microstructured continuous-flow technology.
Nutrition insecurity and livelihood decision-making in rural Myanmar. Global progress against malnutrition has been too slow to allow the Millennium Development Goals on hunger to be met. International research has proposed that these failures are due to the fact that the livelihood options available to poor households are increasingly misaligned from their traditional channels for ensuring food and nutrition security. Global progress against malnutrition has been too slow to allow the Millennium Development Goals on hunger to be met. International research has proposed that these failures are due to the fact that the livelihood options available to poor households are increasingly misaligned from their traditional channels for ensuring food and nutrition security. This argument is highly influential in international development research, underpinning calls for nutrition-sensitive development interventions. The aim of this project is to test the proposition using original survey data collected from 1 600 households in rural Myanmar. This will be the first project of this kind, aiming to shed crucial insight into this issue at this vital moment in Myanmar's transition.Read moreRead less
Evolutionary Dynamics and the Transformation of Rural Australia. Understanding the ways in which Australia's rural heartland has been transformed is critical to constructing competitive regions. This project aims to pioneer the application and development of evolutionary economic geography and staples theory to an investigation of the transformation of south-east and south-western Australia, covering the long boom of the post-war period, through the restructuring 'crisis' of the 1980s and 1990s, ....Evolutionary Dynamics and the Transformation of Rural Australia. Understanding the ways in which Australia's rural heartland has been transformed is critical to constructing competitive regions. This project aims to pioneer the application and development of evolutionary economic geography and staples theory to an investigation of the transformation of south-east and south-western Australia, covering the long boom of the post-war period, through the restructuring 'crisis' of the 1980s and 1990s, to a multifunctional countryside. The explanatory power of the local modelling 'tools' that this project is expected to develop moves beyond the 'one size fits all' suite of policy prescriptions, with the specific potential to inform rural and regional policy and practice.Read moreRead less

This project aims to assess the impact of global production networks on worker representation in Myanmar’s garment sector, which is leading the country’s integration into global supply chains at this crucial time in its economic and political development. This project’s findings will be used to theorise how complex interactions between different economic and social actors across geographic scale affect the rights and interests of garment workers, and the quality of their employment. This will provide significant benefits that will make an important contribution to scholarly understandings of the impact of labour agency on global production networks and provide a strong evidence base for decision-making by local and international stakeholders.Read moreRead less
Institutions for Food Security: Global Lessons from Rural India. Between 2006 and 2008, global progress in combating world hunger stalled. World food prices increased by 71.4% and an additional 115 million people joined the ranks of the undernourished. This is a human tragedy which has fuelled political and economic turmoil across many countries. India has 28% of the world's hungry, and is an increasingly important economic and political partner to Australia. This is a human tragedy which has fuelled political and economic turmoil across many countries. India has 28% of the world's hungry, and is an increasingly important economic and political partner to Australia. This research will involve a team of Australian researchers working with Indian counterparts to develop a framework that explains what causes risk and resilience to food insecurity, and offers practical insights for policy-makers. Aftermaths of War: Violence, Trauma, Displacement, 1815-1950. This project aims to investigate the cultural, social and psychological aftermaths of wars between 1815 to 1950 from a comparative, transnational perspective. By connecting the displacement of people, the brutalization of warfare and the trauma associated with it, this study will offer a broader and more complex understanding of the experience of civilians and combatants in the wake of armed conflicts. In so doing, it will challenge traditional periodizations which delineate between periods of war and peace, and seek to uncover the profound legacies of war not just within but beyond nation states. This will prompt a re-evaluation of our understanding of what constitutes warfare and its aftermaths.Read moreRead less

This project aims to produce new knowledge about Indigenous nation building (INB) processes. Based on research that self-governance increases Indigenous socioeconomic and community capacity, this project will collaborate with two Aboriginal communities to investigate factors that impact the transition from 'identifying' to 'organising' as political collectives to enable self-governance. Such knowledge has the potential to directly contribute to increased wellbeing for Indigenous communities as they define it. It aims to contribute to Australian and international Indigenous governance, political science and Indigenous methodologies literatures. The project could significantly benefit Indigenous peoples, the broader Australian community, Australian governments, and Australian and international INB researchers.Read moreRead less

Emerging adults (ages 18-25) are now facing unparalleled social and technological change and the on-going effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such demands can be overwhelming and undermine engagement with education and employment, with serious impacts for the individual and society. At the same time, our novel model proposes that the diverse daily adult-like stressors that characterise emerging adulthood can also drive growth in flexible emotion regulation when combined with reflection on, and insight into, their own coping processes. Our research expands scientific knowledge by taking the first steps to uncover why some emerging adults increase their ability to flexibly regulate their emotions over this period, whereas others fail to do so.Read moreRead less
