Productivity and work-life balance in technology-enabled virtual work environments. This project examines the impact of technology-enabled virtual work environments on the productivity and work-life balance of professional knowledge workers. Guidelines will be developed that improve organisational and individual outcomes for professional knowledge workers who use technology extensively in their interactions with others.

This project aims to investigate humans' cooperation with automated systems by conceptualising joint intention awareness. This project expects to generate knowledge about a new cooperative driving behaviour model for automated vehicles, utilising a transdisciplinary approach that mixes human-centric methods with deep learning techniques. Intended outcomes are new joint intention awareness theory, new interface for automated vehicles, new methodology for cooperative behaviour research, and enhanced research capacity. The expected significant benefits are for automated systems to become more predictable, acceptable, readable and safer to use by everyday people.Read moreRead less
Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain r ....Building a Prototype for Quality Information Retrieval from the Internet. This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain relevance feedback. The outcome will be a prototype system useful to business and industry though to guide our thinking we will use issues in constructing a quality digital library collection as a sounding board.

This proposal aims to enable the development of social attentive user interfaces—those that employ sensors such as eye trackers and thermal cameras to monitor the locus and level of users' attention and adapt their behaviour accordingly. The project lies in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, drawing from machine learning methods to design novel user experiences. Expected outcomes include insights into how people manage their attention, new methods for attention estimation and classification, and novel systems for e-learning and work productivity that demonstrate these new capabilities. As a result, this project will provide the benefit of enabling system to no longer be blind to users’ attentional, social, and cognitive contexts.Read moreRead less

Expected outcomes include a framework for how to design interactive systems that encourage users to try new things, and a greater theoretical understanding of how to diversify user behaviour.Read moreRead less
Advancing Australia’s hospitality industry through interactive food. This project aims to develop the first framework for the design of interactive food to advance Australia’s hospitality industry. The project expects to co-develop with restaurateurs and chefs interactive sounds, smells and tastes technologies that enable them to create novel eating out experiences and evaluate diners’ reactions. This project aims to develop the first framework for the design of interactive food to advance Australia’s hospitality industry. The project expects to co-develop with restaurateurs and chefs interactive sounds, smells and tastes technologies that enable them to create novel eating out experiences and evaluate diners’ reactions. The expected outcome is an easy-to-use toolkit (comprising a software suite and low-cost sensors) that can be readily incorporated into hospitality operations. This should provide significant benefits, such as enticing people to go out and visit restaurants, supporting some of Australia’s 600,000 hospitality jobs while fostering Australia’s innovative food culture.Read moreRead less
Streaming video media using semantic information. Delivering video over the Internet has posted a big problem. Video files are extremely big and need hours or even tens of hours to download. Much research has been attempted over low-level structures such as coding, buffer, protocol, agent and server. These techniques are either not scalable or impractical. This project aims to collaborate with CyberView on developing a high-level scheme of streaming video using semantic information. It breaks videos into shots and allows semantic browsing of the content. It also introduces intelligent agents with various behaviours.Read moreRead less

This project addresses unsolved issues of usability of e-health information systems across diverse stakeholder communities that need to coordinate to deliver the expected revolution in patient-centred health care. The project will help realise the Nation's large investment in e-health by improving the likelihood of system acceptance, thus making a significant contribution to facilitating the important institutional transformations expected of these systems. The timeliness, depth and breadth of the study will yield outcomes that will enhance Australia's research reputation. This project directly addresses the 'smart information use' and 'promoting and maintaining good health' national research prioritiesRead moreRead less

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks bring a tremendous threat to web services on the Internet. Large amount of web services were pulled down worldwide by the DDoS attacks, with huge losses in business. Effective approaches to defeat DDoS attacks are desperately demanded. Most existing DDoS defense systems aim to only protect the victim network and are not fully integrated. In this project we propose a novel defense system to protect web services from DDoS attacks. Our system is one of the first systems that have a mixture deployment in both victim end and attack source end, and integrated capabilities of intrusion surveillance, traffic control, and traceback, thus achieve better control results over other mechanisms.Read moreRead less

Raising people's awareness of healthy and ecological food options with nutritional data and educational information does not foster a sustained practice towards a more environmentally friendly food culture. This study seeks to develop a better understanding how to go beyond just informing and into supporting and sustaining action and change. Drawing on interaction design, ubiquitous computing and real- time information, the study will deliver research findings that inform viable new design approaches and information interfaces which will strengthen Australia's position to resolve the problems of obesity, malnutrition and ecological issues of mass food processing, and contribute to the sustainability of life in Australian cities.Read moreRead less
