Summary
This project will assist parents and carers of children affected by fetal alcohol exposure to manage their behaviour problems. It will utilise the widely researched and applied Australian program "Triple P", enhanced for these families. The project will take place in Fitzroy Crossing, WA, a community which has already shown great resourcefulness in addressing this problem. If successful, the current poor outlook for these children will be greatly improved.
Regulation Of Cardiometabolic Disease By A Novel ATP Binding Cholesterol Transporter, ABCA8: A New Therapeutic Target?

Summary
Approximately 1.7 million Australians and 12% of the population in Singapore has type 2 diabetes (T2D). We have identified a cholesterol transporter, ABCA8, the absence of which produces symptoms similar to those seen in humans with T2D. The aim of this project is to understand the molecular basis of the diabetes symptoms in mice that do not have ABCA8 with a view to identifying this transporter as a drug target to reduce T2D and its complications, including heart attacks.
A vaccine to prevent AIDS is urgently needed. The European Union recently awarded over 20 million euros to a European consortium, called EAVI2020, to advance multiple HIV vaccines into human testing. Five Australian HIV vaccine experts are named investigators on this award to provide advanced laboratory analyses and intellectual input into the 5 year program if this NHMRC-EU Collaborative Research Grant is successful.
