Vision impairment and quality of life: The development of a new education and self-management program. Vision impairment affects participation in daily living and quality of life. To encourage health aging and meet the needs of an increasing number of older people requiring vision-related services, a self-management program is proposed. It aims to educate participants about low vision, self-management strategies (problem-solving skills, ways of coping emotionally), and self-care. To encourage health aging and meet the needs of an increasing number of older people requiring vision-related services, a self-management program is proposed. It aims to educate participants about low vision, self-management strategies (problem-solving skills, ways of coping emotionally), and self-care. The program is a bio-psychosocial approach designed to empower individuals to manage low vision effectively, increase self-efficacy, maintain good health and improve life quality. The results will be used to develop an improved model of care for people with impaired vision.Read moreRead less

Whilst machine-generated speech is generally of good quality at the level of the single word, it is noticeably less natural-sounding at the level of the sentence. This project examines an important aspect of the naturalness of human speech, namely, the effect that sentence structure has on individual consonants and vowels. A break-down of this naturalness is seen in some speakers who have suffered traumatic brain injury: such speakers perform well when asked to utter a short word, but struggle when asked to produce a longer string of sounds. A better understanding of the interaction between speech sounds and sentence structure will lead to improvements in the treatment of speech disorders, and in the quality of human-machine communication.Read moreRead less

Paramedic crew on board air ambulance helicopter provides rescue and medical emergency, to critically injured/ill cases, in metropolitan/regional/rural areas. These operations are complex and involve mission analysis that governs critical life saving decisions. Currently the analysis and decisions are crew knowledge and experience dependent and thus prone to human error.
The complex process of mission analysis needs to be modelled as an 'Intelligent System' to support critical life saving decisions. In this research project, academics and paramedics will jointly develop an 'Intelligent Decision Support System' to address the key problem of pre-mission analysis and decision support, for Air Ambulance Services.
The project is in the designated research priority area for 2003 funding - 'Complex/Intelligent Systems'.Read moreRead less

This project aims to increase the volume of streamed data that can be handled on a low-powered device with limited memory. In finance, health, and transport, data arrives at enormous rates, and data-driven decisions must be made quickly. Likewise, to keep Australia secure, national agencies monitor and gather vast data sets. Increasingly, devices and monitors that have limited resources are making these decisions and they require computational techniques that run extremely efficiently. The project expects to develop and improve approximate data structures that operate in tight resource bounds. Anticipated outcomes are improved event recognition and dramatic speedup in analysis of streams in areas such as finance, health, transport, and urban data.Read moreRead less

This Training Centre aims to increase value in mining through clever applications of ‘lean processing’ and train the next generation of scientists and engineers in advanced sensors and data analytics in complex resources; knowledge priorities for the mining industry. Sensor information will be linked to the resource’s in-place knowledge to enable data analytics of all embedded knowledge. Processing can then be tuned to resource attributes, maximising value ‘on the fly’. Benefits will include increasing certainty on product quality and maximising throughput and recovery. Outcomes will include new tools to rapidly model geological and geometallurgical uncertainty with sensor inputs, to track the resource to product and enhance interpretation.Read moreRead less
When caring ends: Understanding and supporting informal care trajectories. This project aims to advance understandings of how, why, when, and for whom caring ends, including the socio-cultural and relational factors that shape experiences before, during, and after caring. This project aims to advance understandings of how, why, when, and for whom caring ends, including the socio-cultural and relational factors that shape experiences before, during, and after caring. Using an innovative, multi-method sociological approach, and foregrounding carers’ voices, this project expects to generate new knowledge on the meaning and experience of care and caring. This project is significant in bringing together leading researchers and key carer-focused organisations, spanning service sectors and moving across care relationships, life stages and contexts. Expected outcomes include enhanced service capacity with tangible policy and practice benefits that will enable sustainable and fulfilling informal caring experiences.Read moreRead less

The project will help break down disciplinary divisions between those interested in medieval musicology, the history of science and the history of ideas by bringing together specialists from all three domains. The production of an interdisciplinary monograph devoted to an upheaval in thinking in 13th century Europe, in which experience challenged arguments from authority, will deepen awareness of the interconnectedness of the musical, scientific and intellectual traditions inherited by Western culture. It will also encourage international recognition of the innovative capacity of Australian scholars to engage in interdisciplinary research, and provide an opportunity to nurture early career and postgraduate researchers within this country.Read moreRead less

This project will design algorithms to construct, augment and route on geometric graphs in the presence of obstacles. Such graphs have many real-world applications, including transport networks. This project aims to give solutions with hard guarantees on the timeliness of the delivery of the people, goods, or information being transported in these networks. Expected outcomes of this project include efficient and innovative algorithms for realistic geometric graphs, which both advances the knowledge in this field of computer science and make our existing networks more reliable. This should provide significant benefits in the maintenance and utilisation of the communication and transport networks we use every day.Read moreRead less

Integrated command and control facility for large-scale critical infrastructure management. This is a test bed facility for achieving sustainable operation of Australia's critical infrastructure, particularly at airports. The facility will enable an integrated and coordinated strategy to increase operational resilience while not losing sight of the complex nature and dynamic requirements of critical infrastructure management.

But most current services regard the data as unstructured collections of independent documents, free of context. Next-generation search applications, such as over social networks, or corporate websites, or XML data sets, must account for the inherent relationships between data items, and must allow the efficient inclusion of search context. Queries should favour semantically local data, giving results that depend on the perceived state of the querier. This project will develop indexing and search techniques for massive structured data sets. The new search methods will incorporate theoretical advances and will be experimentally validated using industry-standard open-source distributed systems.Read moreRead less
