In order to ensure that the data and information from these projects are accessible and easily understood for various audiences (includes Indigenous, commercial and recreational stakeholders, researchers, policy makers and the general public), the IRG has identified a need to create succinct materials that can be useful to those that seek to develop policy and stimulate community driven engagement.
Objectives: 1. To gain an understanding of the materials and formats that policy-makers and key fisheries organizations need in their utilization of research to develop policy. 2. To improve general stakeholder awareness of the key research findings in of FRDC and IRG projects. 3. To provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with material that they can use in their engagement with government and non-government agencies. 4. To develop a succinct fact-sheets and a report that integrate the key messages of eight previous IRG projects in a user-friendly and culturally appropriate way. Read moreRead less

- determining a meeting schedule and work program - developing terms of reference for the group - developing processes under which the IRG will operate - building communication channels within the IRG, to broader forum participants and beyond - working towards processes to identify a more permanent arrangement with respect to representative(s) for the National Priorities Forum - working towards developing a ‘futures plan’ from the Cairns workshop outcomes and principles to provide more solid actions for progression - key outcomes have been developed and there is a need to identify the RD&E to deliver on the key principles - providing advice on a process for getting the Cairns forum group back together to review the IRG outcomes and processes - providing advice to FRDC, National Priorities Forum, people development program and assistance with the scholarship selection promotion.
This project seeks to provide a means to support the IRG so it can achieve the tasks it has been requested to address. These tasks could not be achieved without logistical, financial and human resource support for the group. Without the support of FRDC none of these actions will be able to take place.
Objectives: 1. To provide logistic, operational and executive support for the FRDC Indigenous Reference Group (IRG) to assist in the development and oversight of indigenous focused RD&E outcomes. Read moreRead less
Providing Real-time Feedback On Diet Quality In Remote Indigenous Communities To Support Policy Makers And Other Key Stakeholders In Making Decisions To Improve Food Supply And Access In Remote Indigenous Communities.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
Community leaders and other decision makers have indicated that real-time feedback on diet quality in their communities is fundamental to support them in improving the food supply. This project will provide critical evidence to support this. I will consult with local stakeholders to develop visual reports that have evidence-based information on diet quality and strategies to improve the food supply, and will test whether the provision of this information is effective in improving diet quality.

Tactical Research Fund: Seafood Industry Partnerships In Schools - Program Pilot, Tasmania

Fisheries Research and Development Corporation
Funding Amount
$73,621.00
Summary
School teachers report a difficulty accessing relevant and accurate information about the marine environment, current sustainable commercial fishing and marine farm practices. This, coupled with a recognised paucity of young people embarking on a career in the seafood industry indicates a need for greater interaction between the seafood industry and the educational sector.

This, coupled with a recognised paucity of young people embarking on a career in the seafood industry indicates a need for greater interaction between the seafood industry and the educational sector.
A general lack of knowledge about commercial fishing practices in the public arena has contributed to poor public perception of the seafood industry, and in fact public attitudes to commercial fisheries are often negative and ill informed. Objectives: 1. Develop and trial pilot educational program between seafood industry and School classes year 1 to 10 in Tasmania with a view to National extension 2. Facilitate new and existing partnerships between schools and commercial fishers and aquaculture operators. 3. Facilitate work experience opportunities for young people. 4. Provide opportunities to increase general community understanding of complexities of marine resource utilisation as well as cultural fishing practices. Read moreRead less

The FRDC IRG has invested in a number of research projects to advance Indigenous rights, interests, opportunities and engagement in Australia's fisheries. However, fisheries management agencies across the jurisdictions appear to have struggled to engage with or make effective use of these outputs and to make progress with Indigenous fishing interests.
IRG is seeking to commission a project to assist in dealing with this issue. The project is intended to establish effective means for Indigenous fishing R&D outputs to deliver policy and management outcomes. To do this, the project will engage with agencies to understand: their information needs; current progress, impediments and opportunities in integrating Indigenous fishing R&D outputs into their policies and management; and develop a template that can be used by all future PIs to frame IRG research outputs in a form useful to agencies.
There is also an identified need to build Indigenous leadership capacity to shape fisheries policy and management at the highest level. This project involves an Indigenous collaborator and a focus on their development through participation and professional executive coaching. The Indigenous collaborator, will also bring cultural advice and insight to the project.
In terms of IRG priorities, this project has the potential to contribute to:
Establishing the primacy of first nations in the fisheries areas Acknowledgement of Indigenous Cultural Practices Self-determination of Indigenous rights to use and manage cultural assets and resources Economic development opportunities arising from Indigenous peoples cultural assets and associated rights Capacity building opportunities for Indigenous people are enhanced.
MEASURING SUCCESS
Success for the project can be measured by:
Development through participation of an Indigenous collaborator and increased cultural awareness in wider participants Usefulness of a report identifying agency priorities, opportunities and impediments to incorporating Indigenous R&D outputs in policy and management Indigenous R&D outputs being more readily adopted in policy and management Usefulness of a template to ensure ongoing adoption and engagement of IRG outputs Objectives: 1. Document the impediments and opportunities for Indigenous engagement and adoption of IRG project outputs across fisheries management jurisdictions in Australia. 2. Identify the priorities for Indigenous fishing in jurisdictions with a focus on the 5 IRG RD&E priorities. 3. Develop a report synthesizing the impediments, opportunities and priorities for Indigenous fishing engagement and adoption to guide future IRG investment. 4. Develop a template for future IRG projects that will ensure engagement and adoption are maximized. 5. Provide professional development and capacity building for an Indigenous collaborator and grow cultural awareness in wider participants. Read moreRead less
