The management of greenhouse and other acid gas emissions is vital to a sustainable future of both the economy and the ecosystem. This project will develop novel nano-materials for gas separation by tethering organic functional groups to the surface of porous inorganic supports. These materials offer the promise of combining the high selectivity and high capacity of liquid phase absorption systems with the rapid transport rates of gas-solid adsorption systems. Success would open up several new possibilities for reengineering gas separation systems based on the use of these materials in solution, as solid phase adsorbents (pressure swing adsorption) and/or as permeselective gas membranes.Read moreRead less

Key industrial chemical mixtures with similar size and boiling points are difficult to separate by conventional distillation methods. Currently, purification of olefins alone accounts for 0.3% of global energy use. The expected outcomes of the project will have a huge impact on industrial purification processing by providing a disruptive membrane technology, and will significantly reduce energy consumption and open up new routes for resources.Read moreRead less

Design of adsorbents for kinetic separation of gases. The purpose of this project is to design, synthesise and test a new family of adsorbents for separation of gas mixtures of environmental and energy significance. The outcome will be a thorough understanding of diffusion in adsorbents and preparation of several candidate adsorbents with superior separation characteristics.

This project aims to develop the basic design principles that govern the performance of liquid metal alloy catalysts for the methane pyrolysis reaction and manufacturing of ammonia. The project expects to generate new knowledge in understanding the reaction dynamics occurring at the gas-liquid metal interface under true working conditions and the composition-catalytic activity relationships of multi-component liquid alloy catalysts through a combined experimental and computational/theoretical approach. The expected outcomes are new liquid metal alloys that open the gateway to a new dimension of catalytic applications. The project should benefit Australia’s key societal challenges of emissions reduction, hydrogen storage and food security.Read moreRead less

The Australian alumina and aluminium industries contribute over $11 billion export income annually. All refineries, except one, operate in rural areas and are the main economic drivers in these regions. In order to maintain the industry's commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its processes and remain economically sustainable, innovative technologies are required to monitor mercury emissions. The aim of this project is to develop robust sensors, for online monitoring of mercury vapours, that operate under challenging industrial environments. This project will also provide excellent training for young researchers in established international industrial research groups, thereby meeting skill shortages in the Australian resource sector.Read moreRead less
The New Oxidation Chemistry of Amines. Organic compounds containing nitrogen, including amines, are distributed throughout the atmosphere, where they are removed through oxidation reactions. Surprisingly little attention, however, has been directed towards the oxidation chemistry of amines. Surprisingly little attention, however, has been directed towards the oxidation chemistry of amines. This problem is of growing importance as the leading technology for carbon capture from power stations involves amine solvents, which would potentially lead to large new sources of amines to the atmosphere. This project will develop the new chemistry required to describe the oxidation of amines in the atmosphere, in order to better predict the impact of these under-studied molecules on air quality.Read moreRead less

Being considered only as a mathematical possibility over the past 75 years, they might be surprisingly materialised owing to recent rapid experimental advances. In collaboration with the world-leading cold-atom laboratories in Australia, China and the USA, this project aims to pave a new direction to create and manipulate Majorana fermions towards realistic atomtronics devices, by using the highly controllable setting of ultracold atomic Fermi gases. This research complements the search of Majorana fermions in solid-state devices.Read moreRead less

This project aims to understand one-dimensional materials by engineering quantum wires of interacting fermions with ultracold atoms. Particles confined to move in one dimension behave differently than in three-dimensional matter, revealing quantum phases and exotic forms of superfluidity not seen in higher dimensions. Ultracold atoms allow the precise control of interactions and a perfectly isolated and defect free environment to study such phenomena not easily achieved in solid-state systems. The goal of this project is to provide quantitative insights into the thermodynamic and superfluid properties of one-dimensional quantum materials with potential significance for new innovations and applications in emerging quantum technologies.Read moreRead less
