Nanometrology of laser-trapped airborne particles. This project aims to develop a new concept of touch-free measuring of physical characteristics of nanoparticles using specially designed optical vortex beams. The new concept will be of direct importance in developing new nanotechnologies demanding ever-increasing purity of every element in the industrial environment and production processes.
X-ray Ghost Imaging and Tomography. This project aims to achieve safer, faster, and cheaper 3D X-ray imaging through a technique known as ghost imaging. X-ray imaging provides valuable information about internal structures, however, X-rays are carcinogenic and exposure (or dose) should be limited. X-ray imaging provides valuable information about internal structures, however, X-rays are carcinogenic and exposure (or dose) should be limited. Ghost imaging is an unconventional technique developed with visible light that has many potential benefits over conventional imaging. This research group are world leaders in ghost imaging and expect to develop software and hardware techniques to realise its potential and extend it to ghost tomography. The focus of this project is on reducing cancer risk in medical imaging, and allowing real-time quality control for 3D printing in safety-critical industries such as aerospace.Read moreRead less

Many advances in our technology-driven society rely on the precision measurement of quantities such as accelerations, magnetic and electric fields. A higher level of measurement precision leads to a clear economic or strategic advantage. We expect to provide the Australian industrial and government sectors with new and better methods for making precise measurements with accelerometers, gyroscopes and gravity gradiometers. This proposal will place Australia with only a handful of other countries as an international leader in the new technology of coherent atom interferometry. It is expected that this proposal will lead to innovative prototype devices as well as significant patentable technology. Read moreRead less
Sulfur isotope fractionations in Earth evolution. Sulfur isotopes provide a unique window into the major events in Earth's history. Techniques have been developed for measuring all four sulfur isotopes, including the low abundance sulfur-36 (0.02 per cent) to 0.2 per mil, in situ for sulfides. This project will make innovative technological developments to the counting system to extend this capability to the lower count rates obtained from sulfates. This will open windows for research on proces ....Sulfur isotope fractionations in Earth evolution. Sulfur isotopes provide a unique window into the major events in Earth's history. This project will make innovative technological developments to the counting system to extend this capability to the lower count rates obtained from sulfates. This will open windows for research on processes occurring in the early solar system, atmospheric and hydrologic conditions in the Archean, ore-forming processes, and evolution of life on Earth. This project aims to develop a permanent magnet machine for high speed operation (more than 50,000 rpm). A high-speed interior permanent magnet machine will solve some of the complex constructional and sensor-less control issues related to high-speed drive systems. This project will develop permanent magnet machines with simple constructional features, reduced use of costly rare earth materials, inherent sensor-less control capability and flux-weakening. These machines are expected to be used in many global growth sectors including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, energy generation and storage.Read moreRead less

Digital interferometry is a new concept which will allow the measurement precision of interferometry to be applied in otherwise inaccessible or unsuitable environments. It will enhance the performance of major scientific instruments, such as gravitational wave detectors and optical telescopes, whilst reducing the cost, giving Australia a high profile in the quest to understand the universe. When applied to everyday situations, such as surveillance, traffic flow or vibration monitoring, it can give Australian industry a economic and social advantage, increasing the wealth and security of the nation. General market equilibrium analysis of securitisable assets in the presence of private information, when contracts are incomplete. Three key markets (among others) were involved in the gestation of the worst financial crisis seen since the great depression: the market for mortgages and the market for securities, backed by mortgages and housing market. The focus of this project is to examine financial fragility in such markets, theoretically applying outcomes to Australian policy.
Exposure dating with manganese-53, neon-21 and beryllium-10: a new toolkit for studying long-term landscape evolution. Australia today is the driest inhabited continent but this was not always the case. Tens of millions of years ago the climate of Australia was considerably wetter. Then, several million years ago, aridity in Australia developed producing most of the desert features of the red Centre that we see today. The age of our deserts and other arid features are not, however, well known. This project will determine the age of desertification in Australia, thereby enhancing our understanding of such processes and the response of our landscape to changing climate.

By definitively answering outstanding questions about an Australian gravitational wave observatory - Where should it be? How sensitive? What astronomy will it aid? - we make the case for the international community to help build this observatory, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in rural Australia and keeping Australia on the cutting edge of all branches of astronomy. As a flagship client of advanced data GRID technologies, we will also shape the growth of Australian knowledge of, and infrastructure for, next-generation communications technologies.Read moreRead less
