This project aims to develop an advanced sensing system with interactive analytical road health monitoring for smart highways. The project expects to provide potential savings of millions of dollars and improved road quality through targeted, optimised, value-for-money highway maintenance, identified by deployment of cost-effective, energy-efficient miniaturised electromechanical sensors. The expected outcome of this project is the development of a fit-for-purpose and evidence-based early warning system for smart highway construction and maintenance. This should provide significant benefit through foreseeing potential geotechnical risks before they happen and enabling early intervention to enhance road safety and mitigate economic losses.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a miniaturized high-precision laser robotic device that can fit comfortably in the mouth to perform pain-free, vibration-free dental operations by utilising silicon-carbide on silicon technology to create a millimetre-sized two-axis controllable, highly-reflective mirror robust to high-power ultra-short laser pulses. This project expects to generate new knowledge in micro-mirror control using optically excited piezo-resistive sensors, and cold femtosecond laser ablation of hard dental tissue. Expected outcomes include a working prototype for laser removal of tooth materials at speeds exceeding dental drills, providing benefits in miniaturized laser devices and ultimately removing pain from dental procedures. This project aims to pioneer a novel, high-performing class of nano-patterned core-shell particles as chromatographic materials. It will use advanced polymerization and particle preparation techniques in combination with degradable nanoparticles design, to enable the plug-and-play assembly of chromatographic columns. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is one of the most important analytical techniques for polymer chemistry. The expected outcomes of this project are faster measurement times and the possibility of imaging molecular weight distributions at a new level of detail. This project could place Australia at the cutting edge of size-exclusion chromatography phase design in partnership with a leading manufacturer of stationary phases.Read moreRead less
Social citizenship and employment for secondary school students. The study will guide communities, policy makers and social institutions about how best to encourage the development of social and workplace citizenship behaviour in young people at a time of multiple, intersecting and possibly contradictory social, policy and legislative changes. The study will guide communities, policy makers and social institutions about how best to encourage the development of social and workplace citizenship behaviour in young people at a time of multiple, intersecting and possibly contradictory social, policy and legislative changes. It will identify the structural mechanisms (via curriculum development, industry policies/practice and public policy development) through which young student-workers may become less vulnerable and more empowered in their labour market experiences. Ultimately, this will result in a stronger voice for young people and hence a strengthened social fabric in the domain of workRead moreRead less
Managing Productive and Collaborative Relations in Australian Workplaces. Concerns over workplace productivity are high on the agenda of policymakers. Evidence suggests that collaboration in the workplace and high involvement approaches have a productivity premium of up to 20 per cent over those without the commitment to collaborative approaches. However, collective relations do not necessarily mean union relations nor necessarily collaborative relations. This research will benefit Australia's social and economic fabric through understanding alternative means by which collaborative workplace relations lead to productivity gains. This is consistent with the current policy approach of government in promoting productive and harmonious workplace level industrial relations.Read moreRead less

This project expects to generate significant improvements in GMT performance, with ten times greater image resolution than the Hubble Space Telescope and current estimates of >90% sky coverage, compared with ~50% coverage for current technology. Expected outcomes of this project include the development of a highly trained workforce and continued international collaboration in the field of high-technology sensor systems. This contribution to the GMT will provide significant benefits—it will change the way we view the Universe.Read moreRead less
Sustainable dollar notes and other polypropylenes from bioderived feedstocks. Fossil fuels provide us with the essential chemicals for our life style. The chemical industry recognizes limited supply and a need to reduce carbon emissions. Microbes are able to supply green chemicals (e.g. bio-ethanol), but efficiencies are often low. This project will develop microbes for the fermentative production of plastics from cane sugar.

Chemotherapy is toxic to the bone marrow where blood cells are produced. A low white blood cell count and in particular a low neutrophil count is linked with infection in these patients. Unlike red cells and platelets, neutrophils are difficult to collect from blood donors and hence are not routinely available. In this project, we will develop a practical, cost efficient process for the production of neutrophils from cord blood. Transfusion of these neutrophils should reduce the chance of patients suffering serious infection, allow them to recover faster from their chemotherapy, and reduce the need for admission to intensive care.Read moreRead less
