Rebuilding Troubled Regions: The Difference that Space Makes. This project aims to examine economic restructuring processes focusing on the parts of regional Australia that are being left behind by globalisation. The project will examine patterns of firm entry and exit in disadvantaged local economies following major plant closures and identify the causal pathways associated with sustainable employment and industry growth. The project will deploy the innovative methodology of Qualitative Comparative Analysis and utilise recently developed datasets with a view to isolating causal relationships. Based on the core disciplines of Economic Theory and Experimental Economics, but with extensive links into other areas of economics and interdisciplinary policy, it is concerned with the design of institutions and policies when rational economic agents (individuals or firms) are embedded in complex biological, social or technological systems. Examples of such systems include the bioeconomic and biophysical systems of the Murray Darling Basin, telecommunication networks and the internet, power distribution grids and markets, health and insurance networks, and information networks (including systems of intellectual property). Grid-enabled fusion of global data and local knowledge – applying the INWA Grid to eResearch links with China. This project extends a model of eResearch that has been demonstrated between the UK and Australia in a collaboration between the UK National eScience Centre and Curtin University that modelled consumer behaviour in telecommunications and financial services markets using Grid technologies. The INWA (Innovation Node – Western Australia) Grid was extended to the Chinese Academy of Sciences ....Grid-enabled fusion of global data and local knowledge – applying the INWA Grid to eResearch links with China. This project extends a model of eResearch that has been demonstrated between the UK and Australia in a collaboration between the UK National eScience Centre and Curtin University that modelled consumer behaviour in telecommunications and financial services markets using Grid technologies. The INWA (Innovation Node – Western Australia) Grid was extended to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in January 2005 and now offers the potential for applying these techniques to emerging markets within China. Modelling and understanding these dynamics within the most rapidly developing economy in the world provides a number of valuable outputs but will also allow a Grid support for collaborative eResearch across three continents to be tested and developed.Read moreRead less
