Summary
Viruses are known to cause arthritis (HIV, hepatitis viruses, mosquito borne viruses). Symptoms of viral arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. The mechanism of disease is poorly understood. We have developed a novel animal model of disease and human cell culture models by which to study disease caused by viral infections. This models provide an excellent opportunity to explore the mechanisms of rheumatic disease in a functioning animal and to explore new treatment regimes.
Women's political participation, representation and well-being: learning from China's villages. Through a comparative study of Chinese villages, this project tests a framework for analysing the interplay between women's political representation and women's well-being. The project outcomes include new conceptual and methodological tools, strategies for enhancing gender equity in governance and development, and scholarly publications.
Strengthening economic resilience in Monsoon Asia. Sharing, reciprocity and resource pooling are at the frontline of recovery and relief when economic crisis or disaster hits Monsoon Asia. This research aims to shed light on cases where these economic practices have been innovatively harnessed to diversify livelihoods and build economic resilience. This project will ethnographically examine the evolving institutions of Chinese capitalism through a focus on business-government interactions in three mid-sized factories. At each site, approval has been obtained for in-depth research access. The project will lead to a book and a series of articles about the evolving policy environment in which local governments interact with entrepreneurs and the counter-strategies entrepreneurs adopt. Melanesia's violent environments: Extractive resource industries, agrarian change and conflict in the Western Pacific. Large-scale mining activities were deeply implicated in the armed conflicts on the islands of Bougainville (1989-98) and Guadalcanal (1998-2003). Island Melanesia is now on the brink of a major new mining boom, compelling an urgent reconsideration of the relationships between mining, violence and political fragmentation in this island region. Reasons and Rationality. The project explains how we assess the truth and falsehood of everyday claims about what people have reason to do. It also explains what legitimizes our practice of praising and blaming people for their success and failure at doing what we think they have reason to do. In so doing it provides a foundation for both our ordinary practice of holding people responsible, and for the more institutionalised counterpart of this ordinary practice in the law.

This project aims to explore the relationship between justice and injustice in the People's Republic of China (PRC), and the impact of changing conceptions of justice over the last thirty years. Research will focus on key legal cases in the PRC since the 1980s.
