The reform of healthcare systems presents one of the most pressing and fundamental challenges for nations such as Australia. To date, hospital redesign and innovation initiatives have had limited impacts and outcomes at a system level with improvements limited to discrete areas. The aim of this inter-disciplinary research is to promote the scaling up of such initiatives to have systems-wide outcomes. The research aims to address institutional constraints and organisational factors and will develop practical frameworks, processes and resources. These intend to enable hospitals to develop organisational and leadership capacities to ensure investments in redesign and innovation have ‘whole system’ economic and healthcare benefits.Read moreRead less
Innovation in Australian mid-market firms: The critical role of leader cognition. The innovation literature has focused on innovation in large corporations and small entrepreneurial firms, ignoring medium-sized firms. The innovation literature has focused on innovation in large corporations and small entrepreneurial firms, ignoring medium-sized firms. With a rare opportunity to work with a partner organisation on a range of mid-market firms, the project aims to focus on the unique theoretical aspects of innovation in medium-sized firms. The project’s investigation addresses critical gaps in the innovation strategy literature and contributes to a nascent literature on the microfoundations of organisational outcomes. Specifically, the project focuses on how leader cognitions drive the intensity and type of innovation and influence the performance consequences of innovation. The project also aims to provide practical prescriptions to medium-sized firms in Australia.Read moreRead less
Boards of directors and the governance of emergence risk. Australian firms systematically under-invest in innovation and other future-oriented activities. An underlying premise of this research is that, in part, this is because they do not systematically include emergence risk in their governance activities. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is one of the most pervasive sources of technological change in contemporary Australian enterprises. ERP systems are computer-based technologies that are designed to increase efficiency and achieve major cost savings across the entire organization. Their implementation has significant implications for the structure, nature and management of organizations. This project's innovative application of an organizational change model to eight detailed case studies across a range of organizational types will generate important new insights into the effects of ERP implementations at Australian organizations and help explain why some implementations are more successful than others.Read moreRead less

The research will show that public buildings provide fertile ground to plant industrial seeds; but to have an impact on the local economy, they must respond to specific structural conditions or be supported by political will. These findings will improve Australia's institutional understanding of the relationship between cost and investment in construction, and clarify that the evaluation of building productivity requires a long-term perspective. Government agencies should use institutional projects to define their public face but also to plan and implement industrial strategies. The research will help Australia maximise its creative and technological capability by understanding the factors conducive to innovation and its acceptance.Read moreRead less

Major projects build lessons for the future and draw upon past lessons. Australia's New Parliament House represents a building of enormous scale and complexity, constructed within a tight time period, which provided unprecedented opportunities for Australia's construction industry to examine and transform its own practices. By producing a detailed history of the procurement process of the building and a systematic assessment of its industrial influence over time, this research project will amplify the importance of intellectual investment made through technical innovation in public buildings. The project will also help Australia maximise its creative and technological capacity by understanding and accepting factors conducive to innovation.Read moreRead less

This project will investigate the use of wireless handheld computers, in three acute care clinical units located at Southern Health and the Royal Women's Hospital, to determine the impact on patient safety and quality of care. There is a need for real time point-of-care access (and input) to patient information, nursing reference information, and drug information for nurses in Australian hospitals. This project aims to address this need by providing nurses with wireless handheld access to such resources. This project is extremely significant, as the outcomes will provide nurses, in Australia and overseas, a set of guidelines for managing wireless handheld computers in clinical units, to enhance patient safety and quality of care.Read moreRead less
