The ultimate aim of this project is to rationally design and optimize new types of environmentally-sustainable, cost-effective and high performance microwave dielectric materials and devices for advanced information and communication technology (ICT) applications. This is a designated National Research Priority area. Our fundamental understanding of dielectric materials and their properties will be enhanced considerably by working on this project. Further, we will promote the relationship between the fundamental science of polar crystalline materials and practical applications. If successful, the results will enhance Australia's capacity and standing in this highly competitive area. Read moreRead less

New classes of heterogeneous manganese-calcium water splitting catalysts analogous to the unique biological water splitting cofactor have recently emerged but with far lower catalytic rates than seen for the biological system. These new materials are promising targets for large-scale hydrogen fuel production with low cost, high efficiency and ease of manufacture. To achieve this, the performance gap between these materials and the homogenous biological catalyst must be bridged. Multi-dimensional site-selective spectroscopies, including magneto/optical resonance methods which are aimed to be developed in this project are expected to provide new, atomic level understanding of properties needed to achieve high catalytic efficiency, thus guiding rational catalyst design.Read moreRead less

This hurdle is the efficient electrical conversion of water into hydrogen and oxygen, a two part process of which the latter is the most chemically difficult. Inks for the fabrication of thin-film photovoltaic devices by solution processable deposition techniques. Due to their high cost the current generation of solar cells has had limited uptake into the market place. With the use of nanoparticle inks that can form light absorbing layers, solar cells may be fabricated cheaply in the future with solution-based manufacturing techniques, such as spray coating or printing.
Next generation supramolecular frameworks. This project aims to prepare new supramolecular frameworks assembled by hydrogen or halogen bonds. It is anticipated that this work will increase fundamental understanding of supramolecular self-assembly processes and the dynamic processes that are possible within these rearrangeable systems. The project aims to prepare a family of related frameworks, which will allow a detailed comparison of the stability, porosity and biotechnological applicability of new supramolecular materials. The expected outcomes are the development of lightweight and benign organic systems that will have applications in the removal of toxic organic and heavy metal pollutants from water, and in the encapsulation and stabilisation of catalytically-active enzymes.Read moreRead less

This project aims to afford new heterometallic molecular materials as precursors to catalysts and as new optical materials, exploiting oxophilic and carbophilic transition metal atoms for synergistic cooperation in certain catalytic processes, and using the polarity of heterometallic bonds to achieve strong optical limiting. Expected outcomes of this project include cluster structure/composition - catalysis/optical properties correlations that will signpost the route to efficient catalysts and optical limiters. This Project should provide significant benefits such as chemoselective catalysts needed for pharmaceutical drug and agricultural chemical production, and broad temporal range optical limiters needed for optical device protection.Read moreRead less

The tropical oceans and in particular the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool, immediately to Australia's north, play a key role in modulating global and Australian climate through El-Niño and related phenomena. Using a new microanalysis approach to analyse individual foraminifera from deep-sea cores, we will reconstruct past salinity and temperature variability within the Warm Pool, and determine changing rainfall patterns and, ENSO and monsoon behaviour under climate conditions that lie outside modern records. This information is vital for understanding past climate and predicting the future intensity and frequency of El-Niño related drought and wet cycles in Australia.Read moreRead less

The fabrication of ordered structures at the nanometre scale is essential if the aspirations of nanotechnology are to be achieved. Understanding the fundamental nanoscience controlling the fabrication and operation of such devices is vital. The combination of instruments requested for this project will allow the construction of arrays of nanoparticles, their precise characterisation and the direct measurement of interpartice and intermolecular forces at the pN level. Parallel computational chemistry and state of the art experiments will lead to the optimised design of nanostructures that will be applied in diverse areas, including mineral processing, biosensors, photonics, magnetic storage and catalysis.Read moreRead less

We will evolve enzymes that degrade organophosphate pesticides (OPs) that are used in Australian agriculture. Although these OPs were designed to kill insects they are closely related to chemical warfare agents and are known to be toxic to humans. Bacteria have acquired a number of enzymes that degrade some OPs. One such enzyme has been used in field trials demonstrating its potential to degrade OP residues. However, many pesticides are not removed rapidly and OP-degrading enzymes require modification(s) if they are to be useful environmental reagents - this can be achieved with directed evolution.
